here's a crazy cooking challenge
My family was sitting around talking about Halloween candy today -- someone had brought home a bag of marshmallow eyeballs that have a gooey reddish interior -- and it occurred to me that the only really gross candy that hasn't yet been made would be some kind of lick'n'stick gummi scab.

So how about it?

How would you make candy scabs? They would have to be irregular in shape and color. If they could stick to the skin, that would be cool.

Maybe some kind of fruit leather?

1. Sure. Sugar cooked a little past the soft ball stage
and poured into a very thin layer on greased parchment paper might do it. It would be very tricky to control: too cooked and it would be brittle and not cooked enough wouldn't give you that deep brown, scabby color. An addition of baking soda might also be necessary just before pouring to give it that bubbly texture.

By the way, the eyeballs shouldn't have been red inside. They should have had clear sweetened gelatin.

3. They do make candy scabs.

We got a catalog at work the other day with lots of fundraising size candies for Halloween. Some of it looked pretty nasty, like mint maggots. Ugh!

4. If I were so inclined to play in this direction
I'd probably be using a concentrated fruit gelatin and sugar syrup mixture. I have no clue what the ratio would be. Here's a link to gummy recipes including sugar free gummies and Gummy Pumpkins.

7. Didn't they sound good!
They caught my eye too! I'm definitely gonna keep the sugar free gummy recipe in mind too. It actually looks really easy.
