Husband is building me
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 10:20 AM by hippywife
a small hutch. It has to be small because, well, we have a small house. With all the canning and baking supplies I keep around now, I've run outta kitchen.

The bottom of it is close to being done. It's a little rough but it's made out of old maple gymnasium flooring. He bought a whole truck load of it, pieces of all sizes, for only $35.

There will be space between the bottom cabinet and the top one to put all my flour and sugar canisters. The bottom will hold all the canning jars and stuff like that. The top will have either glass or tin panels, and will hold all my finished canned goods.

In addition to the drawer in the top of the bottom cabinet for my foil, wax paper, parchment paper, and the like, I've asked him to put one in the bottom of the hutch section, too. I have so many spices in my cabinet that if I want something, I have to pull nearly everything out to find what I want. I was at a friend's house and she has all of hers just lying in a drawer on their sides. It's perfect...you can see what everything is at a glance and find exactly what you want! I don't like the under cabinet spice storage that slides out and I don't have enough wall space for a spice rack so this will work out great!

1. I can't wait to see the finished product ;=D
I, too have an extremely small kitchen. It needed renovation and in the 90's it was, however, I didn't get to have any input in the design. BIL got that responsibility, so while it did give me more storage, I had to sacrifice my Chambers stove. The Chambers will not fit in the area that was made for the stove. I loved the Chambers, even though the oven thermostat didn't work, I bought one of those you stick in the oven.

I have since gotten the Chambers stove back but have no where to put it.

You're so lucky to have a "hippyman" to build this for you. I'm sure you will enjoy the additional storage it will give you. As well as the love that went into building it for you, and with your input, very important.

Give your hubby a

over that stove. I'd find somewhere, somehow to use it. Lucky you to have one! I'm so jealous!

I'm pretty lucky. When I say I need something, he's very good about making it happen. That's why I don't mind all the cooking I do. He's so worth it.

:hi:

4. You are a lucky one you, but then again so is your hubby

My stove sat in my FIL's huge building just waiting for me to be able to have it again. After he died we brought it home again. They bought it new, and it is a fine stove. It would heat the kitchen and even spilled over in other rooms. lol

We were thinking of selling it, however, I don't want to. I want to keep it and if we ever were fortunate to move I wanted to make sure I could find a place for it in my new kitchen.

We've been at our current residence since 1980. The house was the same house hubby lived in until he was 5, then they moved to a bigger house. We were just renters for 20 some odd years, but then the in-laws gave us the deed, which was always the intention.

The house is only 1200 sq. ft. and the back yard is huge.

It would have been really great if we could have enlarged our living space, I could have had a larger dining room and kitchen. But alas no money to work that into our dreams.:-(

Be sure to post pics when your hutch is finished.

:hi:

3. My father would have done that too ......
.... the ultimate recycler, he was. He'd have loved to have had a truck load of maple boards. You're lucky!

5. We have a dining room floor made of recycle high school gym flooring.
It turned out great!

I also needed a cabinet similar to yours and was lucky to score a "free" Hoosier cabinet. I say "free" because my husband worked it into a remodeling deal. He saw it in the garage covered with dirt and grime. He ended up trading it for some minor task, cleaned it up and fixed a few things and now it's mine! Lucky me! :)

Enjoy your cabinet! :hi:

8. Hey, you!
I'm thinking I'm going to really need a bigger one but there is no space for a bigger one, so it will have to do.

How are you doing these days? :hi:

9. I'm good, thanks!
I'm having to get my labs done every day as my platelet count has dropped pretty low. If it drops any further, I'll have to get a transfusion. I'm a little tired but able to keep up.

Thanks for asking! I'll look forward to seeing pics of your cabinet when it's finished.

11. It's almost done so...
we moved it into the house. He took this pic before I had all the stuff in the top cabinet and some decor on the top. I tried to take a new pic a little bit ago but the light isn't very good right now.

We still have to go to the salvage yard and find the architectural grille work for the panels in the top cabinets and then it is done! Not a bad job at all for having used salvaged, not perfect lumber.

I wanted it painted white to match the appliances and the woodwork in the kitchen. I love it!

I picked it out because he had already picked out some antique bronze hinges and bronze is not my favorite. But these go well with it. He did a wonderful job. Pretty good for being made of an old gymnasium floor. LOL

12. Just a couple words of warning about putting all your lovely jars
of home canned goodies on UPPER shelves: Northridge earthquake.

Please don't ask me how I know about this. Trust me. It wasn't pretty, and years later I was still finding tiny bits of broken glass and dried glop in the strangest places all over the kitchen and dining area. Including way inside drawers.

15. Sound like a horror story!
I decided against doing that anyway. I moved all my baking supplies into the top and will move my canned preserves and pickles into the cabinet over the counter in their place.

We're not too prone to earthquakes here, anyway. :)

And if the New Madrid fault blows, you'll have a lot more to worry about than the condition of your jars.....

18. You just wanna be aware what a mess you wind up with when Mother Nature
picks up those jars and flings them full force around the room...........

What's really bizarre is that the evening before the quake I had just stuffed some pickled cauliflower into the tiny remaining space of my home-canned goods cupboard (3 shelves of an upper kitchen cabinet - tomatoes, kraut, pickles, preserves, fruit, etc), and I distinctly recall saying to myself, "Self, if we ever have a big earthquake this stuff is gonna make a HELL of a mess!".

And about 6 hours later that's exactly what we had. Teeny weeny bits of glass and lots of glop that got moldy before I found it all. Ack. Even had to clean the ceiling.

wasn't the best, as you can well imagine, being tongue and groove gymasium flooring but I think he did a lovely job.

24. I wasn't feeling so hot this morning but got better as the day went on.
The first day back to school after treatment is always the hardest but I've got all day tomorrow to take it easy. You're always so sweet to think of me. :pals:

I LOVE the fact that your cabinet is made of recycled wood! That just adds so much character to it! I know you're planning to put in wire mesh inserts but if that plan falls through, it would look great with glass, too.! :hi:

25. WOW, what a work of ART and it's functional
I want one, I WANT ONE:-)

I am so glad you posted the finished product. It is really gorgeous. Did your hubby use a Latex paint or oil based?.?.? It looks like an oil based from the pic.

I recently I saw a program on recycled wood, and the guy was making furniture from it. He didn't add any new paint, he just worked the pre-existing paint that was already there. Mix Matched paint and different types of wood. He had some very interesting pieces. He made cabinets, end tables, coffee tables all sorts of great looking furniture.

Give your hubby a  for me.
