3. Have the time of your life, kid..........
Sounds like a wonderful holiday coming up for y'all.

How excellent!

My Polish/Lithuanian/Russian mother and her sisters used to make a nut roll that they learned from their mother. It was unlike anything I've ever had. All I ever got to do was to shell the nuts and then put them through the old blue hand-cranked grinder. Yet, what I remember best is the sight of my beautiful mother and my beautiful aunts swirling around each other in the warm, crowded kitchen, all of them laughing and talking and feeding me small pieces of sweet things.

Thanks for reminding me of this.

20. My mother used to make those
Her mother was Ukranian. She used to make only the nut and poppyseed varieties. I remember her starting the dough very early in the morning. She would put it in a big deep basin on a chair behind the coal stove to raise. I don't ever remember her making less than 6 of each type of roll so she'd have enough to share. I haven't eaten as good a roll since she can no longer make them.

One of my biggest regrets is that I never bothered to bake with her to learn her little secrets. She never measured anything and did it all by feel, which was her term.

14. Omigosh - the nut roll things!
Must be the crushed walnut filling slathered on the dough that's rolled and baked. Yum oh yum oh yum! I like all three kinds of filling used in these - crushed nut, poppyseed and apricot. Did I say "yum"?!

7. Probably,
but I am not sure how focused any of us will be. My Grandmother is quite ill and my Mother and her sibs are trying to get care for her against her will, and caring for her themselves in the meantime, so no one is focusing too much on the holiday. Honestly, I would not be going down at all if I wasn't concerned that I won't have too many more opportunities to see my Grandmother.
