The Best Laid Plans....(snowed in)
But mousie, thou art not thy lain,
in proving hardships may be vain,
The best laid schemes o' mice and men
gang aft aglee....And leave us not
but grief and pain for promised joy.
Burns-to the best of my recollection..

Just canceled my restaurant reservation. My date canceled,my Mom and Dad canceled and really it was relief I felt. The alternative was a 150 mile round trip through blowing snow with a nervous meal I could not possibly enjoy in the middle. So now we enter alternate plan "B"..though the cabinets for a quick non-traditional dinner to be shared with my stay-at-home brother and a couple he invited, whose plans were also short circuited....I'm beginning to think mexican here.
More important though than any Holiday plan is a sincere Holiday spirit.I approached the days plan with great anticipation of a country drive and a great meal with friends and family that must now be delayed.More important now is to embrace the new opportunity presented...an impromptu cooking bash with other friends, a fire on the hearth and the beauty of the year's first snowfall.Thankful? You bet! May all my friends at DU be as blessed and happy as I am this Day....Peace,Cat

3. One of my more memorable thanksgivings
was when I visited my sister in college. She planned to wait for me to show up (on thanksgiving day) and make a ritual of buying everything together before cooking it.

Naturally she didn't think about stores being open, or how long it takes to thaw a turkey. We bought some cornish game hens, but couldn't even get them thawed that day - despite us holding them for what seemed like ages over the warm air vent from the apartment below.

We had dried peas and rice for dinner, and had a good laugh over it.

4. I know you'll be making it a wonderful day
With all that snow and an adventure meal, it'll be terrific.

One year we were having a gang of friends over for Christmas dinner. Then we got a blizzard. The streets all over the entire region were impassable. There we were, hubby and me, a giant pan of lasagna and two forks. :D

I envy you for your snow, today. Wish we had at least a little to liven up the weather.

5. In the spirit of the situation .......... Snow Ice Cream
Ingredients:
2 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup milk or light cream
2 teaspoons vanilla
Pinch of salt

Place the above ingredients in a large bowl. Mix with an egg beater and this will make an uncooked custard. Now, scoop up a pan of new fallen snow and mix the snow into the custard. You need to eat this right away!
This will make about 1 quart of snow ice cream!

**Please note: This is an old recipe and snow was a lot cleaner back in the 50's. Now, snow may be tainted with all sorts of things, even as it falls from the sky. Also, some people recommend not to use uncooked eggs. If you feel funny about using uncooked eggs, use your favorite cooked custard recipe, but don't wait till the custard is set. Do not make eating this a regular habit. But, a treat once or twice a year will not hurt you! Yummy!

6. No meal on earth is worth the risk of an accident..Good for you!
A mish-mash meal can be a treat too..It's about who's there..not what you eat:)

Friday, go buy a discounted frozen turkey, and make TG dinner next weekend:)

8. We survived it well............
......the "holiday feast" turned out to be shepherd's pie, but using up the last of a prime rib au jus instead of some shepherdly cut.Added a fresh tossed salad and hot buttered italian rolls, and closed out with a no-bake strawberry cheesecake. A nice fire in the fireplace, conversation and a couple of cold beers sealed the deal...As they say in the country and western songs-"It ain't love, but it ain't bad"....Hope everyone here had as nice a day-and Oh yeah-the snow was beautiful....
