Security Update 2008-008 Screwed Up My iMac
I received this automated software updated yesterday. Installed it, and it screwed up my computer. On reboot, I couldn't get past the first blue screen and the Mac OS box with the "starting up" thermometer bar never appeared. I booted from the install CD and ran Disc Utility which fixed some big problem, but that didn't help.

Eventually, I did a system software re-install from the CDs and then did the upgrades to get the OS back to 10.4.11. The computer acted funky until I did a shut down and then did a 10-sec shut down from the surge protector. Everything seems to be fine now.

Anyone else have these problems?

1. Not here.
But, Safari's been acting a little weird...sometimes the scroll bar disappears on certain pages, and I can't copy and paste between pages opened in multiple tabs.

3. There was an issue with some machines. It had to do with old firmware.

2. Yeah, I did
Whatever it was, Disk Utility from the install CD fixed it for me, though. I didn't have to reinstall.

4. 10.4.11? Are you not running Leopard?
I have had some difficulties with the latest Apple update as well. The boot up process crashed and reloaded but it is working fine now on my MBP. How old is your iMac?

5. The last update I did took half an hour after the automatic reboot to display signs of life:
I left it alone but I started researching recovery info meanwhile. It did finally boot successfully -- but it booted to a bootable backup disk, not the main disk. I thought about starting to restore the main disk but decided I had nothing to lose by shutting down and restarting, since the backup disk seemed okay. It restarted promptly and properly on the correct disk and hasn't given me any trouble so far
