Yup, I'm still using this:

with one of these:

(DRX-82OUL/T)

As it is, I use 10.3.9 and I really want to use the new nano I got for Christmas.

I know I can't upgrade to Leopard (600 MHz here) so I'm thinking about Tiger. Has anyone run into trouble using Tiger with an older Mac? I'm seeing very mixed reports in discussion forums. I guess the time is now to do this, as Tiger seems to be disappearing and there doesn't seem to be a patch.

As ever, I'm very nervous about changing stuff around. Any reassurances? Dire warnings?

Thanks all!

1. I installed it on a Rev B iMac. It was 333mhz and it worked well.
The only problems could be the third party processor, if it is a third party processor.

2. Wow, that's great.
I think the DVDrw is a Sony, but that's the only third-party gear I have.

I went ahead and ordered the 10.4 software. Yay!

3. Good for you. Let us know how it works out.
After it is installed go to system preferences/Appearance. Select the Appearance pull down and select Graphite. Turn off Genie Effect in the Dock Prefs. That should give a small boost.

A black or other solid color desktop should help too.

Do the above if you think it might need a speed boost.

5. Wassat?
Like having the weather and word-of-the-day kind of things on the desktop?

That won't be a hardship...I'm not very widget-y.

7. Some people just absolutely love those widgets.
Why is that? A friend of mine had those things all over his desktop and couldn't understand why his computer was suddenly so slow. That wasn't his only problem, but it sure didn't help.

6. Unless I'm mistaken, you have a bigger problem: No USB 2.0 in a B&W
You may have to add a pci card, but that makes the whole shebang more difficult and tenuous.

And installing Tiger requires a dvd drive.

Without USB 2.0, you can't charge the Nano.

I'm not 100% of whether data/music will move into a Nano without USB 2.0.

9. You know, that's what I was worrying about.
I got the external dvd to install 10.3, so I figured that might be okay. However, the 10.4 specs call for firewire (which I have) and an internal hub (which I'm not sure I have). Is that the USB 2.0 that you're referring to?

And that might be the reason I get a message telling me I should move my older nano to a different USB when I plug it in, too.

Hm. Now I'm wondering if this will work again.

Thanks for the advice.

10. USB pci cards are cheap enough to try - like under $10-15 cheap...
An internal dvd is also cheap n easy to install. Maybe free if you have old computers or craiglist, etc.

Or firewire usb hub -about $30

Just options - you have a few others, too - esp if you've friends with computers and ethernet hub...
