What browser do you use and why?

I'm really trying to figure out the fastest and most secure browser to run on my 900mhz g3 ibook, and I was wondering what you guys use. I'm using firefox right now and it runs really well, but I'm always on the lookout for a faster browser.

1. I use both Shiira and Safari. Shiira is light and fast.

3. Firefox, with an occassional reversion to Safari.

Brought Firefox with me when I switched from the dark side sixteen months ago, and use it about 99% of the time. Very occassionally I've found a few sites that wouldn't handle it, so then I use Safari.

I've noticed that with each revision of Firefox there are fewer problem sites, so I'm using Safari less and less.

I use Firefox on my Windows machine, as well as my Mac. The only, and I mean ONLY, site that I use Safari for is AT&T's Callvantage.

used to use safari - but found that if it is open for more than a few days it tends to slow down and use massive amounts of ram - dont know if it is fixed now, but camino works well

6. Same here

Only it happens with every single browser listed, including Camino. It's pain. I wish at least one browser would hold up for me. Opera does better and OmniWeb, but they all do it at some point. I have to close down, reboot, and try another browser until that one has its own fit. I keep hoping somebody would get to the bottom of this issue, but it doesn't happen to everyone, so it may never be resolved.

7. Firefox- and you can make it faster!

In Firefox, type "About:config" in the URL line. Type "connections" into the filter, then set the numbers (going down) as 500, 200, 20, 10. You could make them anything you want, but those are the numbers I use- they seem to do pretty good.

8. Safari

Firefox is faster but I don't like its look. It's too...windozy for me. Safari is elegant and fast enough.

I don't like Safari because you can't control the dpi. But it comes in handy when I want to listen to Stephanie Miller out of Boston--it frees me to use Firebox to browse. And certain AOL music streaming events only work on Safari. I use IE only when I have to.

12. This just in, LOL!

Today was my second day on the job. I spent the first day downloading Firefox (for Windows 2003) and uploading my favorite bookmarks (present company included) and media players. Today, I was instructed to log in to the company's express mail account. To get an estimate of the rate, I had to click on a graphic, but nothing happened--the Firefox popup blocker was on. I said, "no problem," hit the back button, and my co-worker nearly fainted! But the previous page came up AND reloaded; then I simply turned off the popup blocker for that site. Then I said, "Well, now you know why I prefer Firefox!"

P.S. The "config" trick in Post #7 works for Firefox Windows, too.

However, recently I've had trouble uploading and editing my vlog. Right after Blip had it's big crash. So I use Firefox for those tasks.

18. Flock would not import my Camino bookmarks

It would import Safari, but only had a few of those vs hundreds on Camino. The help section also was weak and incomplete. It was very fast and very good, but I will stick with Camino until they finishing tweaking Flock.

Safari seems like it can run at glacial speeds if you're on dialup (which I am), and Firefox lets you change themes if you don't like the way it looks. Now mine looks mostly like Safari, but is faster.

I've yet to figure out how to change my settings in Safari to retain them, so if I need to do anything other than browse web pages, I use IE.

(And, by retaining settings, I mean that if I go into DU and try to search on something, the default search is search all active topics. If I try to change it to search for the last 24 or 72 hours, it will flip back to the default as soon as I hit "Search" - and, it's not just DU)

I use Safari for general surfing mostly. IE for work-related stuff. Firefox and Itunes for radio shows.

21. I just haven't been able to successfully program the Firefox

to initiate as a start-up icon on the toolbar. I have to go to the spotlight, find the file and then open it. Because of the extra steps, I usually start off in the Safari mode, and then I may switch mid-stream when I have more work to do.

23. I assume you mean putting Firefox in the dock?

If so, two suggestions.

First, when you start Safari, open the preference pane under the safari menu in the menu bar at the top. There, click on the 'General' tab. In that pane you'll see a 'Default Web Brouser' item with with whatever brousers you have installed. Use the arrows at the right of the little window to scroll to the Firefox entry and click on it. This will make Firefox the default whenever a program call for a browser.

Second, tho I assume you would have already tried this, open a finder window and select applications. Scroll until you find Firefox in that window, then simply click on it and drag it down to the dock. From then on Firefox should stay in the dock forever and ever, or until you want to get rid of it, when you will click on it again and drag it from the dock. Let it go and watch it disappear in a puff of smoke.

22. I use Camino.

I found Safari to be much slower. I use Firefox on my old pc.
