Question about buying myself a PowerBook
I've decided my next machine will indeed be a Mac, but I have questions. I really need a new laptop and not really a desktop. I really want an iMac G5, but needs trump wants. I think I'd be better off with a new PowerBook, but I kinda need to be sold on them. Sure I can listen to a salesman, but I trust you guys a lot more. :) So, if I'm going to spend the extra money on a PowerBook vs. a Win laptop, what will it get me? Obviously the added security and ease of use, etc... but what will it REALLY get me? They're so darned expensive.

Thanks in advance. :)

Oh, and should I wait until they're released with an intel chip? It's coming, so should I hold off?

1. First what do you intend to do with the Powerbook.

IOW, what kind of applications do you intend to run on it. If you intend to do high end video editing and such, certainly a powerbook is the rig for you.

However, if your usage runs more to the average user, such as web surfing, word processing, photos, etc, save yourself a few hundred and go for the iBook. Personally I was set on a powerbook an went down to the applestore to look at them. After a few questions the rep saw that I did not need the high end of a powerbook and talked me down to the iBook. I appreciate a store that won't upgrade me when I don't need it.

I suggest that if an applestore is near you, ask the reps there and they will give you their oppinion. It's worth more than mine.

2. I'd love to, but I really want the 17" display
Plus, I'd like to really exploit some apps like garageband, as well as video editing. I'm also a web/database developer so I'd be using it for that as well, but the price is just so high.

3. I bought a new G4 Powerbook running Tiger two months ago

Just love it.

I switched to Mac from the PC universe early on, about '93 or so, and have never looked back, though I have had many occasions to use PCs. There is no comparison. Mac with Tiger is the way computing was meant to be. I am still learning, and still being impressed.

I love the easy portability of my new Powerbook, and have used WiFi connections easily all over kingdom come. If I wanted a 17 inch monitor, I'd just buy one and plug it in. No problem. But I am happy with the screen I have on the Poerbook (15"), and I work on this puppy 6-8 hours a day.

If you buy a Powerbook G4 or an Ibook G5 you won't regret it -- once over the ininital learning curve hump. And that learning curve is a gentle one, not a jagged mind-fuck like Windows, et. al.

4. Thanks for the info
I gather, I'd be spending the extra money on a pleasurable computing experience vs. the same Windows bullshit. I can accept that expense as a valid one.

5. As a PC guy who bought an iBook several years ago...
I use the iBook every day. Every single day. I go back to my PC desktop every once in a while to play a PC only game, or use Excel or Word (which I haven't yet splurged for Mac versions of, yet.) But my iBook's my daily companion.

It's the most reliable computer I've ever had. And, from what I hear, my particular model is one of the more trouble prone Apple products ever. So that speaks volumes for Apples stuff.

Price is an issue. In my opinion, it's money well spent.
