Any good vegetarian/vegan biographies?
Hello -

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good biographies (or autobiographies) about vegetarians/vegans.

Thank you.

Tim

2. Ha! Actually, Hitler was mostly vegetarian, but not completely.
Interesting blurb on his asshatness here:

7. WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
Adolph Hitler was no vegetarian. He was ordered to eat a vegetarian diet by his physician, but he was unable to stick to a vegetarian diet!

Even said sarcastically, that lie is wearing thin.

3. Actually, I was thinking about Ghandi...
Hello -

First of all, thanks for your responses.

Your posts illustrate the problem that I've encountered when reading books about people like Ghandi (and Hitler)...they might mention the fact that the subject of the bio is/was a vegetarian, but it's only mentioned in passing (or maybe a paragraph or two is devoted to their being a vegetarian).

So I was wondering if there were books that discuss how/why people became vegetarians - health concerns? religious reasons? moral reasons? or some other set of circumstances?

Again - thanks!

Tim

4. Gandhi's autobiography is good
Gandhi goes in-depth into why he was vegetarian, including a story of the one time in his entire life he ate meat.

5. Thanks, Tucker.
Hello -

I believe that I've heard that story before...was it that he ate some goat meat, and then that night he had a dream that he heard the goat bleating, trying to get out of his stomach??

I've read biographies of Gandhi before, but never his autobiography (I'll look for it the next time I go to the library).

I actually have a book called "Famous Vegetarians & their favorite recipes" by Rynn Berry. It's actually a pretty good book, but I guess I was looking for more "in depth" accounts of why people became vegetarians, what it was like when they first started, what worked (what didn't)....

Again, thanks for your reply.

Tim

6. Back in college I read several about Da Vinci
his bios are usually pretty interesting because he was into EVERYTHING. Sorry I can't be more specific.

8. From George Bernard Shaw through Einstein
there are ample places to find biographies of vegetarians and vegans. Check out quotes at: http://www.famousveggie.com/quotes.cfm

Check out lists of contemporary veggies at: http://www.ivu.org/people/

Happy reading!

9. If you can get it, Dirk Benedict's autobiography "Confessions of a...
Kamikaze Cowboy" is very interesting.

If you aren't familiar with Dirk Benedict, he's an actor....most famous for being "Face Man" in the A-Team. He was also Starbuck in the original "Battlestar Galactica".

10. This book
"Famous Vegetarians and Their Favorite Recipes: Lives and Lore from Buddha to the Beatles" has a chapter on many vegetarians throughout history. Also debunks the Hitler vegetarian myth. Available at Amazon.

11. Mad Cowboy
The story of how a fourth generation cattle rancer became a vegan and animal welfare/organic food/food safety activist.

Short but a really great read.
