What are YOU having for Thanksgiving?
It is always great to hear about what other DUers/veggies/vegs do in the kitchen for the holidays. I've found some great recipes in the past -- share them if you have'em!

Thanksgiving and Xmas are the two times a year I completely indulge in the family food I grew up with. My Nana was a simple Okie who lived for the recipes off the backs of cans and she always did the cooking, so I ended up loving some seriously weird food during the holidays. :D

Our Thanksgiving Day was always the same: chips and dip, winter nuts, and cheese and crackers while watching an entire days worth of sports, and games of blackjack and cribbage. Nana would hardly be seen the entire day -- her domain was the kitchen -- everyone else, stay the hell out. Dinner was as follows:

Fresh turkey
Herbed stuffing
Yams with brown sugar and mini marshmallows on top
Mashed potatoes and gravy
Green beans with bacon
Peas
Ocean Spray Cranberry jelly
Celery stalks stuffed with blue cheese and mayo
Fresh pumpkin pie with whipped cream

My family still does essentially the same meal, I just skip the bird. I know there are better, more tasty, more healthy foods to eat these days, but this meal is something that connects me to my long gone Nana and Grandpa and brings back memories of a lot of wonderful holidays.

So, what are you having this year and how did you used to spend your Thanksgiving??

1. I'm doing Thanksgiving with my mom, as usual.
I get Tofurkey, as she likes it and it's somewhat close to the real thing (she's mostly veggie anyway, so we'd not have turkey as is). Stuffing, mashed taters, gravy, cranberry sauce, either asparagus or peas, etc. LeftyMom sent me a pile of food, so if there's anything left, I may take it with me.

Now, as for USED to...when I was a kid, you couldn't keep me away from the "candy"...you know, the crispy, fatty skin of the cooked turkey. Dead animals all over our table. Real butter, meat gravy. Blech. It was a nice family get-together, though.

2. We don't usually do much.
The past two years we had open faced tofurky sandwiches, with spuds, gravy, cranberry, & veggies - no dessert. This year, my husband asked for lentil loaf & pumpkin pie, so I'm searching online for a tofu pumpkin pie recipe. I'm also going to make spuds, gravy, veggies, biscuits & a pecan pie. :9

4. I'm going to two vegan potlucks, so I don't know what everybody's bringing.
My personal contributions (all veganized, of course) are mostly dessert stuff, because I have a long way to go and it makes ahead and transports well:

a mashed blend of regular and sweet potatoes (if you've never made this try it- it's so easy and so good)
sweet potato cupcakes with coconut buttercream frosting
pumpkin pie
pumpkin cheesecake
apple pie
pecan pie
baklava

I love mixing sweet potatoes into recipes that call for regular ones. Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

his wife, stepsons and my grandson. They will be having a turkey with all the trimmings, of course. I will just be eating the trimmings, which there will be plenty of, as they are hearty eaters.

7. This is a wee bit late, but my dad and I went to a buffet.
I had nearly everything but the turkey and other meats, gravy, and dressing. Good meal though. Tossed salad, pasta salad, corn, green beans (there didn't appear to be any meat in 'em), this great sweet potato and apple casserole, mashed potatoes, wild rice, corn bread, and apple pie. I was stuffed. And afterwards, we walked outside at this restaurant that has a farm theme, complete with a few farm animals--and were followed around by two toms and a hen turkey. The perfect way to celebrate Thanksgiving!
