Vegan Bakery in Los Angeles: No Whey!
http://www.nowheyvegan.com/

It looks like a small outfit focusing on small, boutique orders at present, but DAMN they have some interesting stuff here.

I grew up in LA--though I certainly wasn't vegan when I lived there--and it's amazing to see the sheer volume of vegan or vegan-friendly eateries that have sprouted there in the past 5 years. Do we have any SoCal vegans that can speak more about this renaissance? I only visit once a year, but I do try to cram in a lot of vegan dining while I'm there. :)

1. Looks delicous - of course now that I am no longer in SoCal
and I lived there 13.5 years, something marvelous opens up.

2. Hey, that's about when I fled LA!
There are a BUNCH of vegan places down there now. Worth a trip if you haven't been recently.

:hi:

3. Definitely going to CO and do some hiking in 2010, so CA
isn't too much of a detour :hi:. It's really nice to see some good places opening up.

4. I moved from LA to the SF bay area. GREAT hiking here.
Worth a one/two-week vacation, in fact. :) What an incredible array of hikes within a hour's drive!

5. Northern CA is definitely the place to be for hiking.
I've been up to Mt. Shasta and the Trinity Alps area a few times. Mt. Shasta = eerie and beautiful.

I wore out several pairs of hiking boots in the Angeles National Forest and the Los Padres and then down in San Diego - the Cleveland National Forest. But I'm glad to be home in PA. I really, really missed the trees and freshwater streams while I lived in SoCal....

6. Oh, I've never done any SD area hiking.
But I have to be there for business later this year, so thanks for planting the seed there. :) Any recommendations other than Cleveland NF?

I do enjoy hiking on the East Coast (mostly New England), though. CA forests can be a bit...monochromatic/pine-y at times, and I enjoy the diversity of tree species in NE and the Mid-West.

7. See if you can find a copy of this book "Afoot & Afield in
San Diego County" by Jerry Schad. It's a trail book with over 200 trails described. He has quite a few hikes down around San Diego, but we hiked all over the mountain trails east of the city in the Laguna Mountains, which are part of the National Forest. It's about an hour drive from town if you'll have a car.

9. I lived on Twinkies when I was in my 20s.
I would happily try one of each of their Twinkies. Ok, make that two of the chocolate, please.

11. There's a bakery up here in NorCal that makes a red velvet vegan cupcake.
I just had one the other day. It was AMAZING.
