NYT: Rethinking the meat-guzzler

I was surprised to come across this in such a mainstream outlet. This is a succinct presentation of the arguments for drastically reducing meat production. Nothing particularly novel as far as I can see, but a heartening find.

I think this sentence in particular deserves to be highlighted:

If price spikes don’t change eating habits, perhaps the combination of deforestation, pollution, climate change, starvation, heart disease and animal cruelty will gradually encourage the simple daily act of eating more plants and fewer animals.


My only question is why Bittman himself is not a vegetarian if he feels strongly about the effects of industrial meat production.

1. Good article.
He may eat fish or something like that, hence not being a "certified" vegetarian.
