Look what they're doing to dogs in my town
These are upcoming "projects" at UCSF:

Perverse Use of Puppies - Project # A1644-00961-17A: This project involves the acquisition of pregnant German shepherds in the latter stages of gestation from Cornell University in New York. The pregnant dogs give birth at UCSF, after which the puppies (20 - 40 in number) may be given drugs -prior to weaning- to cause their hearts to malfunction. All pups will be "sacrificed" by the project's end and their hearts removed for further study.

Gruesome, Scientifically Pathetic - Project # A43109-22783-02A: This project will use up to 550 dogs over a period of 3 years. Most of the dogs will be surgically implanted with pacemakers. After the dogs recover from surgery, the pacemakers will be programmed to pace rapidly, causing congestive heart failure. Other dogs will have a portion of their mitral valves torn in order to cause the blood to flow backwards, also causing congestive heart failure. The dogs will either die from the ordeal in less than 6 months or be euthanized and have their hearts removed for further study.

Another Heartless Experiment - Project - # A43109-22715-02: This project will use up to 200 dogs over a period of 3 years. The Principal Investigator is the same as the one for the above, and the protocol is similar, but with a difference in the length of time the dogs will be kept alive (at most 42 days).

There were several protests last month, but they are going ahead with this.

Update: http://www.indybay.org/news/2005/01/1716908.php

UCSF has been busted for animal cruelty before.

1. That's one of the sickest, most disgusting............I can't even say
I think these sick bastard a**H@les do this on purpose to desensitize their students to pain and suffering. This "study" has no merit whatsoever.

Wish I could come protest too.

3. AND there are viable, scientific alternatives to every single one of them
listed here. Bogus. I call bullshit on the entire set of projects.

4. That's disgusting.
What could possibly be the benefit in doing this?

It reminds me of the study a while back that showed that sand caused cancer (forgot to mention, it caused cancer when diluted with water and gallons and gallons of it were injected directly into rats' lungs). Completely fucking pointless and needlessly cruel.

Someone else said it, but how does one get so desensitized that they can do this sort of thing?

I am so sickened by what I have just read. If you find a address or email address that we could write to it would be appreciated. I can't believe people are so disgusting.

7. What's even more sickening is some of the comments.
There's one tool claiming that people who are anti-vivisection are "mass murderers" because of "all the people they could've saved."

This guy seems to be a regular, but I don't know what the hell he's doing on a progressive board. I especially don't understand why he hangs out in the Animal Rights section of that website.

Maybe we should invite him to DU, and he can have a grand old time posting in GD. :eyes:

8. Isn't that the truth.
Funny that you said that about why he is posting on a progressive board. I feel that way about certain people at DU sometimes. x(

11. Yep
That would be "nessie" (also posts as "just wondering", "heard it before", etc etc). You guys ask what he would be doing posting on a progressive board. Well get this: he actually runs the other indymedia site in SF. He's rabidly anti-animal rights and pro-vivisection. Indybay is the result of half the sf indymedia collective splitting off (largely to get away from his tyranny) and now two years later he seems to spend most of his time trolling the new site. He posts huge psychotic screeds, sometimes threatening violence against AR activists. I think it really burns him that the new site is so successful (and has a dedicated animal liberation section) and his is going down the tubes.

13. He keeps threatening these imagined PETA activists
with guns if they come to take his dogs. Sounds like those paranoid freepers who see a "socialist" behind every bush.

I guess both sides have psychos...

People like that are in the "cause" for their own personal gain (making themselves feel superior and all warm and fuzzy about how good they are) as opposed to actually helping to make the world a better place. In my opinion, they're as bad as self-centered Republicans.

16. He's a real piece of work
It's quite comical after awhile and most people who are familiar with his psychosis just don't bother to engage him any more. Unfortunately that means a lot of the crap he puts up goes uncontested...

18. Dog March at UCSF - April 10th
When: Sunday, April 10th, 2005 at 10:45 A.M. Rain or shine. The gathering and the march will last about an hour.

Where: Corner of 16th Street and Owens Street, at the Mission Bay Campus

Parking: From 16th Street, turn into the unnamed street between Owens and 3rd Street. (3rd Street intersects with 16th Street on the east end.) The parking lot is free on Sunday.

The Mission Bay Campus is on the east side of San Francisco, not far from the bay. This is a newly-built branch campus. It is more spacious than the older campus. However, it is likely that the dog experiments, and countless other cruel and unnecessary experiments on monkeys, cats, pigs, sheep, rabbits, mice, hamsters, etc., are still being done at the old main campus. At any rate, we do know that experiments on smaller animals such as mice and rats, or hamsters and guinea pigs, are happening at the new Mission Bay Campus. It has been said that one of the new buildings there will house more monkeys. The buildings are humongous, especially the UCSF Genentech Hall.

It would be ideal to have as many well-behaved dogs there as possible, but if you don't have dogs please come, too! There will be snacks and drinks and water for people and pooches. J Sunday is chosen because too many people can’t make it on a weekday, and we need to tell the media that they can expect 100 pooches and people to be there.

Please mark your calendars. Please kindly email or call me if you can make it this day: noanimalexperiment@yahoo.com, 650-619-9713, so we can have a minimum confirmed count to promise the media.
