Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 03:16 AM by oscar111
anyone able to help me out of this desparing conclusion?

I dont like the conclusion.

I would like to think DU'ers are moved by compassion to come to DU.
Is compassion really this rare in america?

3. I didn't even know this forum was here until I saw your post
on the latest page.

Yup, I care and I think that Dems certainly have more compassion for the poor. This is a new forum so give it a chance to develop. You'll probably see more posts here as the new forums get more notice.

5. wow. 3 re's at three am! LOL
that was fast.

Now if only my big post here about Thanksgiving would just get one teeny tiny re, i would be happy. LOL It has been up a full day and no one re'ed. Hmmm disappointing. I put a lot into it and not one re. Hmmmm . LOL.

Oh, well. I am glad to see you three anyhow. THanks all for the re's. I will now read them.

4. this is a relatively new forum....
I think a lot of the GD discussions envelope these issues as well, but in a more global way. For me, these are the key issues that define liberalism/progressivism and yes traditional Democrats.

8. What Forum?
This doesn't even show up on the "Latest" page.
Most of us didn't even know it was there.

9. I think it's because Poverty is an economic issue involving large numbers
and mind-boggling economics, which frightens many, myself included, off. But I have committed myself to understanding them.

10. First off, I didn't know this forum was here. Secondly
this year I have learned a lot not only about myself politically, but economically. As someone who has lived in poverty in the past, I feel fortunate. My husband and I are trying to do as much as we can by giving back to local charities, helping out wherever we go. Things have changed only because for once in my life, I have seen the destruction and greed of mankind. I have seen these folks in the $150k income bracket bitch and complain about their property taxes and their taxes. I find it funny when my own family can make it considerably well on an income under $25k. The only thing we lack right now is medical insurance (which is another one of my issues). We made WELL under $20k a while ago and if it hadn't been for food stamps, we would have starved. I feel fortunate. The uber-elite right gripe "It's all about personal responsiblity" and yet bitch and moan because their McMansions cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars, their SUVs are too expensive to fill up, and they spend a lot on extras. Am I generalizing?? You bet. I'm sick of the high and mighty types who cry wolf on "personal responsiblity" when it boils down to: poor economy and lack of money to finish education.

Anyhow, off my high horse.

11. Hey Oscar my friend. I see this thread died off early.. I'm here
to chat with ya a bit more on poverty issues. Please come back and let's see what we can stir up!

I get the EXACT same feeling about Democrats attitude towards the underclass. That's not to say I've not read and posted in a number of places here over the months where we did have some invigorating discussion. But, it does die off and the subject goes back to the IRAQ WAR and/or the Environment. Making fun of the Chimp is fun but it doesn't get any real work done for those who are hanging on by a thread in this country. The lack of healthcare, for example, isn't a GAME. It's real and it's a human rights issue, yes...RIGHT HERE IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW. Same goes for HOUSING, food, unskilled labor/JOBS.

Some folks will discuss the dire situation with the lack of healthcare...for which I am equally exercised about..some will chat about being laid off or something like that OCASSIONALLY...but that's it.

How about you and I keep this subject in the face of the rest of America? I'm game. Come back, come back Oscar...whereever you are. :hi:

May I point out to those that are not familiar with the subject of poverty: feeding the homeless is only the tip of the iceberg!!

12. It's symptomatic of the Democrats'/American's main problem
Most people are more easily moved by hot-button social issues and war than they are by economic issues, even though many of our problems in other areas, when examined more deeply, are at root economic.

13. Well stated.
I wonder where my friend Oscar is.... He was the only other person in here that addressed these issues on a regular basis...

COME BACK OSCAR...
