Proposed New DU Group - Social Security - Pissed Off Middle-Agers
OK, so that won't exactly be the name of the group, but that is the tenor of the group I'm proposing.

It is high time we middle-aged folks got PISSED about Social Security! WE are the ones, in the 30-45 age group, who will get screwed over the hardest by the propsed reforms.

This group will discuss strategies and ideas for reforming Social Security equitably...and strategies for fighting the current proposal.

Let's face it...my own ideas begin with taking the wealth cap off social Secuirty contributions!! This is a regressive tax!! Once you have earned, I think it is $88,000, you no longer have to pay ANYTHING out of your income to Social Security!

No, every red cent of EVERYONE'S earnings ought to be subject to the FICA tax. No cut-off!

Second, if they want to establish private accounts, well, then, people like US...who have been PAYING IN for fifteen to 25 YEARS...well, we should start with something in our accounts!!

Why is it fair that I, who have been paying in for over fifteen years...and have about 20 less years to make good money under the new system...why should I start at the same ZERO that 18 year olds just entering the system start at??

They say in the stock market an investment doubles every seven years. Fine. Then my approximately $25,000 I have paid, over the years, in FICA taxes would have quadrupled in fifteen years, so MY account should START at $100,000!!

anything less is CRIMINAL THEFT!!

I'm pissed, and it's time more in my age group GOT PISSED!! We're the ones who will be hurt worst by this proposed plan. the old will get theirs. The young have plenty of time, and little or nothing invested into the current system.

WE, who are in the middle...WE ARE THE ONES GETTING SCREWED!!

Join me!

Let's get pissed off together!

I propose the group be called Social Security Solutions.

I propose all are welcome to join and participate, but the MAIN FOCUS shouldbe on us middle-agers with the most to lose.

The tenor should be anywhere from calm, to raging pissed, like me.

The threads should be about estabishing strategies to fight the current proposal...and strategies for equitable and fair reform for Social Security that will keep social Security alive for generations to come. and startegies for presenting these options that come out of our symposium to our elected officials.

I need ten donor starred members to endorse this proposed group, by saying they will join and participate in these discussions.

The mission statement and goals/objectives of this group are NOT yet set in stone, please, let us discuss any chages you wish to see in the above proposal.

Once we have a firm group of interested, donor-starred participants, and a clear mission, objective, and strategy, I will propose the creation of our group to the Administrative Team.

For now, please merely express an interest in a Group to discuss these issues...and any proposals you have for our general mission, and group tenor, and strategy as well as content.

THIS IS NOT THE THREAD TO SOUND OFF ON BEING PISSED ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY!! I only did it to grab attention. I merely want people to express interest...and any proposals they have for any changes/modifications in the proposed group's mission and strategy statements.

Thank you.

2. Why is the last year of the
Baby Boomers getting so screwed?

I'm going to get my SS in two years..hopefully! I got into politics in 2000 because of Social Security..I wanted it to be there for me and everyone else who wants what they paid in.

There is an organization called National Committee To Preserve Social Security and Medicare that I belong to that seem to be working hard..

My family fought in the Revolutionary war (2 gen's not DAR due to racist issues). I will not leave unless the IQ/ logical thought quotient goes down even further than it is. I'm not sure how much further it can sink.

Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 01:08 AM by mermaid
Let's not debate this stuff on this thread...let's just keep it to interest of the group formation itself, and save the debate for our soon-to-be Forum, okay?

And alittlelark came up with something I have been TRYING for for our name.

I wanted our group name Acronym to come out P.I.S.S.E.D.

So far, between us, we have

Patriots Infuriated at Social Security Eradication ____________.

We need a "D" word which is synonimous with "plans" "efforts" "attempts" "policies" "startegies" something along that line, and we will have our name!

10. and Destruction
That's the whole purpose of the reforms, to destroy SS.

I'd be happy to join the group.

I'm 16 years from retirement, stuck in a job I don't care for but terrified of trying to change with things the way they are. My 401K lost 50% of its value since 2000, and every cent that went into it between 2000 and 2004 just vanished.

I retire in 16 years, and in 17 years I'll be saying 'Good morning, welcome to Wal-Mart'.

Yeah, I'm P.I.S.S.E.D.

Paid Into Social Security, Expect Dividends

and

Patriots Infuriated with Social Security Eradication and Destruction.

Both work out to form the acronym P.I.S.S.E.D.

Ask your working-age friends...Are you P.I.S.S.E.D. yet??

Hey, Mermaid, I'm 42, hubby's 50, so I'm on board with your group. I just posted on your other thread about what P.I.S.S.E.D. could stand for: Paid Into Social Security and Expect Dividends! lol, well, that's my stab at it anyway.

And since I haven't mentioned it yet today, I hate BushCo and their moronic plans with a passion....

I'll join this group!
The cutoff for SS without private accounts is Jan 1, 1950. After that, you can choose whether or not you want to have a private account.
Since I was born two MONTHS after this date, I guess I am one of the people to expect a royal effin'.
So I'll join.

13. If Mermaid doesn't mind
I'd suggest one of the first things to do is get the information at FactCheck out to everyone we know in our age group who's going to be screwed by bush**'s plan. E-mail people, write LTTEs.

FactCheck.org on SS Bankruptcy and Bush's Plan (Thanks to whoever posted this link above!)

I'd appreciate if someone could explain what specifically is going to happen to those in our age group. I know it's bad, but I'm terrible with math and would appreciate details. Basically I take it we won't see full benefits if we don't go to private accounts?? We'll get a percentage after some time instead??

14. This Will Be A Topic For The forum...Not This Thread.
but, yes, we will disseminate that and other things.

So far we have six plus me.

we need just a few more donor-starred folks to endorse the group and I can go to the Admins and get us started.

we need to come up, collectively, with a mission statement and some group rules, but I think this should not be too challenging.

Once we have the name, mission, and rules (plus ten participants in place) we can go to Admins and get the group started, so long as they approve of the group, though I don't see why they wouldn't.

It's time we got P.I.S.S.E.D.

Having just turned 54 a week or so ago, I know the feeling, believe me. Having paid into SS for... what? about 35 years? I'm ready to start taking names and kicking ass.

Tell ya what, Bunnypants. If you're hell-bent to do this, direct the Treasury to cut me a check for what the government has taken from me for the last 35 years, and we'll call it even. I won't even attempt to collect from SS, and the younger generations won't have to worry about supporting me in my dotage. Deal?

I, too, am highly PISSED!! I just turned 53 at the end of November, and that makes me among the most screwed of all. I have paid into SS since 1971, and I jolly well expect to get a return on that money. Chimpy and his gang of thieves be damned!!! Damn it, if I had a car, I would join some of the meet-ups here in Houston. BTW, I'm here on the northwest side of town. Good to see some of us here getting fired up for change! :hi:

20. Proposed Mission Statement
To discuss startegies designed to inform others of the inequities of the current proposed privatization of social Security; strategies to defeat same, and to discuss strategies for REAL Social Security reform, which is fair and equitable to all...and ensures Social Security is around for the generations that follow us.

How is that, everyone?? Can we live with that Mission statement?

Any proposed changes/modifications/additions to it? feel free to speak up...this will be OUR group. I'm just the spark plug starting it.

We need just two more donor-starred responses to make an official request of Admins. Or one more if TheGoldenRule obtains their donor star.

Bush's SS thievery must be fought to the death.

A special group for SS would be a good idea. It would allow those who are well-informed about the program to educate the rest of us. The more of us who know how to debate this issue the better.

We now must wait for the reply from Admins as to whether or not they will grant us a Group.

I will post here the result as soon as I know!

If we ARE granted a Group, I'd like all of you to come over and join up, and add it to your Forums. I'll send all of you private emails to let you know.

At that point, all the other discussion topics that were brought up in this thread, and more...can all be disseminated.

30. Count me in!
I'm currently on SSDI...I figure I got into that program by the skin of my teeth. I worry what will become of other's in my position IF "Chimpco the Vulgar" get's his way.

Already he is suggesting cutting off other "helps" programs so that those who depend solely on SS may not even have a g.damned place to LIVE!

My daughter is 38. Her working life has been spotty. She just enrolled in College...thank goodness there were a few programs left for her to get any aide for that. I worry about her future in terms of Social Security...AND I want my grandson to have a safty net too. Hell, I want ALL Americans to have that safty net just in case other forms of income they may accumulate over their working lives falls apart.

This is war as far as I'm concerned. I'm glad that my local liberal radio hosts have been harping on saving SS for days and days.

I just purchased a fax/combo machine. I AM READY to fax, write, shout, march...you name it, to blast these burglars in the White House.

If petitioning seems like a way to get a groundswell of voices up to Washington, then I'm all for starting one right here.

TAKE AMERICA BACK NOW!

I like the idea, but I've been hesitant because I've been worried that taking the issue out of GDP will result in many people out of the loop. So, I'll make a deal with you. I will join if you will post daily in GDP to let people know about new info or action alerts. Kind of a daily reminder to check in.
