01/04/06 at 01:00 PM State vs. Hulett, Mark
Room 3A 2683-5-05 Cncr/Criminal
Edward J. Cashman
Sentencing Hearing

Judge Edward Cashman's sentence, which he handed down after a two-hour hearing in Vermont District Court in Burlington, could incarcerate Hulett for the rest of his life if he fails to obtain counseling or otherwise follow instructions once he is freed in 60 days.

Judges lack authority under state law to order Corrections to provide treatment for incarcerated inmates, prosecutors said.

2. Even if there was a treatment that showed some success, this man should...
...be punished severely, for his crimes. There's just no excuse for what the judge did, in this case.

3. Interesting article, it sounds as if we need to e-mail the Gov....
I get the judge's point when it comes to treatment. The fact that there is absolutely no rehab in prison is a real problem no matter what crime the person has committed.

There are a couple of good points for extended incarceration:
1) the victim is still a child. If he were put away until she were an adult then there would be less of an incentive for him to contact her since he's obviously attracted to children.
2) there is speculation in the psychological community and has been brought up numerous times on the floor of the house of reps that pedophilia isn't curable and is only maintainable. The question remains, if there is even a small chance that these people could re-offend is it better to take the chance that the course of a child's life will be changed? Personally my sentiments lay with the victim.

It is such a problem that has stalked the human condition for thousands of years. We've come a long way.

4. Flipping ridiculous
You've got to look at what other people are getting for stuff that's so much less. In Nevada, if your under 21, you get 1-4 years for possession of LESS than an ounce of pot, its a felony.
