1. Pamela Anderson looks a lot better w/out makeup
I do know that when they filmed "Double Jeopardy," the director had a fit, because Ashley Judd looked too good in the jail scenes. He told the makeup people to take off all of her makeup. They were like... she isn't wearing any. They had to put makeup on her to make her look BAD.

God. I hate her!!!

6. As hard as Ebaum tried, all they proved is that most women
look better without makeup. I've been saying that since the day I hit puberty.

10. Yeah, doesn't she?
I've seen photos of her w/out before, and was impressed.

13. I think they just used that one to show how effin ugly he has become.
Yet he is obviously made-up. Moreover, I don't hink this fuckin' freak is in the same league as all those other celebs. Or as any of us either.

3. As my husband would say:
Did they use a trowel to apply that make up?

(I have never worn make-up and I am 53 years old).

No time or patience for the beauty regime.

8. I forgot about Halloween
about 23 years ago. I went to a party dressed as a gypsy. My sister made up my face - just normal, everyday make up.

No one recognized me! No kidding.

7. There's a lot more going on in those "makeup" pictures
than just make-up. Airbrushing, careful posing, precise lighting, multiple retakes...it just goes to show that nobody actually can look like the supposed 'ideal'.

11. Never thought I'd say this
But Brittany actually looks cute without make up.

And the rest of them, well, they look like the rest of us.

12. If you've ever known anyone who went to Glamour Shots to be done up
like a model and photographed, you'll know that makeup artists and photographers can make almost anyone look stunning, although it's true that some people are more photogenic than others.

15. Years ago,
I went to a Glamour Shots in socal. I did it as an anniversary gift for my husband. It took him totally by surprise. My favorite shot was one where I was wearing a feather boa. It was a shot I never thought about before.

14. Why would I want to look at this?
I don't care about how a celebrity looks with or without makeup.

Feeling like I should care about this is just part of the larger problem of how our society views women.

17. it's not about the makeup! lighting, digital re-touching... you name it
take this photo of JLo -- the top one is clearly stretched! her bones have never been that slender.

i've done photography in marketing communications and i NEVER, ever give a client a photo that hasn't been 'horizontally reduced" by at least 5 percent.

under the very best of circumstances, with a great photographer, diffuse lighting, etc -- every photo you see in (glossy) print goes thru massive digital re-touch.

why is this posted here, anyway? and why did i just reply to it?

18. pretty dumb.
nobody's perfect. aside from cher's pic, all of them can be chalked up to bad lighting, etc. they're pretty much equivalent to those "before" and "after" makeover pics.

19. Greg's digital imaging
has some great examples of touchups - you can mouse over to see the actual photo, then the touched up version.

21. I show that to my digital imaging classes each year
I wish health teachers showed that sort of thing as well, especially when talking about body image and anorexia. It's one thing to hear someone say the models are all airbrushed, but it's a whole other thing to actually see the two images overlaid over each other like that.

In my class, kids universally react by being horrified at how disgusting the real women look, which is depressing, but also generates a lot of great discussion in a co-ed class of 15-17 year olds.
