Brain imaging reveals the movies in our minds.

Along with the article is a brief video reproduced from neuronal activity while viewing a movie. The process used to produce the video is in a primitive stage; but, I think this is pretty impressive.

Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have managed to decode and reconstruct dynamic visual experiences stored in the human brain.

Currently, researchers are only able to reconstruct movie clips people have already viewed. However, the breakthrough is expected to pave the way for reproducing the movies inside our heads that no one else sees - such as dreams and memories.

"This is a major leap toward reconstructing internal imagery," explained Professor Jack Gallant, a UC Berkeley neuroscientist and coauthor of the study published online today in the journal Current Biology. "We are opening a window into the movies in our minds."

According to Gallant, practical applications of the technology could eventually include a better understanding of what is happening in the minds of those who cannot communicate verbally, such as stroke victims, coma patients and individuals with neurodegenerative diseases.

While I don't consider myself a luddite, there are a lot of sci-fi scenarios that I don't want to become reality.

This a a huge breakthrough. How it will be used may not be so wonderful, though.
