Credit: NASA/Goddard/Arizona State University, Posted on: Wednesday, 22 June 2011, 06:38 CDT

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Wide Angle Camera (WAC) provides the most complete look at the size and shape of the surface features on the farside of the moon to date. This global mosaic is comprised of over 15,000 WAC images acquired between November 2009 and February 2011, centered at 180° longitude, 0° latitude.

3. There seems to be a lot of geological stuff happening
at both poles, far more than any other place on the moon's "edge". I wonder what causes that?

7. it's likely an artifact of how it was photographed
If you look at the moon through a telescope you only see "geological" stuff on the edges and the top. This photograph was created by combining "edge" pictures. They'd have fewer images of the stuff along the equator, but lots at the top.

14. Features near the poles can never be in "flat light"
Light from the sun will always be at right angles (plus or minus the Moon's declination) so that's going to create long shadows which produces greater contrast.
