Remembrance: Apollo 1, January 27, 1967

Today, 44 years ago, Astonauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee died in a fire inside their Apollo Command Module. The subsequent re-design of the Command Module following the fire led to many safety improvements (notably a re-designed outward opening hatch) that many believed permitted the moon landings to occur.

It's sad to me that folks like them, and all of the countless engineers and support teams of scientists, are not more looked up to by the youth of our society... contrast that with what they "really seem to 'care' about: video games, and whether Kim Kardashian screwed a new NBA player this weeek...."
