Death of the father: British scientists discover how to turn women's bone marrow into sperm
British scientists are ready to turn female bone marrow into sperm, cutting men out of the process of creating life.

The breakthrough paves the way for lesbian couples to have children that are biologically their own.

1. That's awful! How will lesbians walk if they turn their bones to sperm?
I know, I'm kidding.

4. what an ignorant post...
seriously, this could be a major breakthrough in fertility treatments for couples where conventional fertility treatments aren't working.

"Frankenbabies"? That's absurd. I'm sure it's the same kind of ignorant, visceral reaction that people were feeling back when IVF first became available.

5. Nice. Start right off with a nasty, little insult. Maybe you were you heading for GD: Primaries...
...but you made a wrong turn? :eyes:

8. What makes you say that?
Seriously, I'm wondering how you came to that conclusion. Did you say "On the one hand, treatments like these have been a great help for infertile couples. On the other hand (xyz) will make them frankenchildren/make their creation immoral/will have some other negative effect"

Fill in the (xyz), please. What makes you think there is a problem? What do you think of IVF?

Ad homs at the makers of the technology not appreciated. :) Of course.

3. Not surprising that the Mail took this tack...
same as the US media when this story was first reported.

The BBC took the more reasonable tack that it would be a breakthrough fertility treatment for heterosexual couples where the man is sterile.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6547675.stm

Not that there's a problem with lesbians wanting families, I just think that the Mail and the US media took the deliberately sensationalist route, and the Mail seems to have turned it entirely in that direction, even using a scientist with an agenda as support for their argument.

7. Nice technology... but...
...don't we already have too many people on this planet?

Seems to me that creating even more ways to create babies only worsens the population problem.

10. Don't most women complain there's too much sperm around already?
I mean, that seems to be the usual complaint.
