The search engine "Ixquick" claims to leave absolutely no trail, but...
Edited on Fri Feb-05-10 03:03 PM by ohiodemocratic
I noticed that when I do a search, for example, "banana," I go to my browser history, and I see the following:

So doesn't this mean that my ISP, too, can find out what kind of search queries I make at all times even if I use Ixquick? I don't mind the fact that a third party may know I visited Ixquick, but it's the knowledge about what I'm searching that I don't like.

One might say well, just delete your history, but it's a known fact that nothing gets deleted from a hard drive unless you melt it or something, and this includes history files. Can anyone explain how private Ixquick is? Thanks.

1. Your browser history is stored on your computer, not at your ISP.
I checked the search site. It's pretty slow, and seems to be doing some stuff in the background that turns on my drive light. I won't go back.

If you're worried about what you're searching for, then you need something more than some proxy search service. Now, they may be storing stuff you don't want them to store. That'd be my guess.

If you don't want history on your computer, you could use Chrome in its stealth mode, although Chrome feeds info to Google about your searches.

Me? I don't search for stuff that I'd worry about someone else seeing. But, that's just me. Your mileage apparently differs.

2. Here's the deal: You want privacy while playing around on the
innertubes, go use a public computer. Nothing is private anymore, and everything's still on your computer.

Or, don't do stuff on the innerwebs you don't want people to know about. That's what I do.

3. everything on a computer leaves a trail
EVERYTHING. Often, it leaves two or three trails. As a defense attorney, you see this clearly during computer crime cases where folks do all sorts of things to try and hide their tracks. There are only a limited number of programs that can completely erase your tracks.
