Iraqi Constitution - Is this what we think is a great government
I was just watching a C-Span show on constitutional history and they read side by side a copy of our preamble to the constitution and the Iraq preamble to their constitution. I simply could not believe what I was reading, is this what our current government thinks is a great constitution. If that's true then I guess we will have to update our own constitution at some point.

At any rate, take a look for yourself.

IRAQI CONSTITUTION

"PREAMBLE

In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

"Verily we have honored the children of Adam" (Quran 17-70)

We the sons of Mesopotamia, land of the prophets, resting place of the holy imams, the leaders of civilization and the creators of the alphabet, the cradle of arithmetic: on our land, the first law put in place by mankind was written; in our nation, the most noble era of justice in the politics of nations was laid down; on our soil, the followers of the prophet and the saints prayed, the philosophers and the scientists theorized and the writers and poets created. "

The rest can be found here.

2. So I guess we can rule out
separation of Church and State in the New Iraqi democracy.

3. Doesn't look to be real promising.
I have found this whole process comical, to a certain degree, because what we are going to end up with in Iraq is a theocracy, which would not be a problem for Bush if is was christian.

But I'm not sure how he is going to spin a islamic theocracy to his base, particularly in light of how much demonizing of muslims has gone on since Sept. 11th.

It could be interesting.

5. You got to think
Friking freepers would sell their grandmother if that's what it took to make a Bush spin work.

6. Wow...
I just read the whole thing. What a mess!

It seems that most rights are guaranteed only as long as the government says so. Privacy is guaranteed, except if it offends morality. Double-jeopardy is prohibited, unless new evidence is found.

It's full of contradictions, goes into ridiculous detail on some issues (like setting up a Central Bank) and has NO detail on important items (like the second legislative house - The Council of Union).

When they were calling this the "Draft Iraqi Constitution", I didn't know they meant "first draft". It's like something written by a very large committee of high-school kids - and not government students, either.
