Catholic Group Criticizes GU Profs
From my employer's student newspaper:

A prominent Catholic watchdog group called last month for 18 professors from Catholic institutions, including four from Georgetown, to be fired for expressing views that they said are contrary to Catholic doctrine.

The Cardinal Newman Society says its mission is to monitor Catholic universities and colleges for adherence to Catholic teachings. In a fundraising letter to thousands of anti-abortion Catholics across the country, the CNS singled out professors for expressing or publishing views advocating abortion, euthanasia or assisted suicide.

Those named in the statement included Georgetown philosophy professor Tom Beauchamp, Medical School professor Howard Freed and law professors Maxwell Bloche and Lawrence Gostin.

CNS President Patrick Reilly claimed that the professors have undermined the mission of a Catholic institution by challenging Church teaching.

2. I'd lay money on it
And you know what they say: "First they burn books, and then they burn people."

3. Not the Cardinal Newman Society again
As we can see, they are the unoffical, unappointed "religious police" in Catholic circles right now. Anything that is not 100% in line with the Vatican point of view is "Un-Catholic". Their big focus is on Catholic schools, colleges, and universities.

The National Catholic Register is redoing their website, but they have a list of "Mandatum Schools", they are "approved" colleges (by the CNS) who are supposed to be wholey "Orothodox" in their teachings and 100% in line with the Vatican hierarchy.

http://www.ncregister.com/features/mandatum.htm (link may work sometime in the future)

That is how the CNS works, they are quick to attack any school and brand them as a "Non-Catholic" school if it does not fit the "Orthodox" definition on ANY little matter. Debate and discussion do NOT exist with them. Thinkers are really not allowed, and in this example it does allow for academic discussions.
