1. I don't know about Maltese, but Washington negot. Treaty of Tripoli
(with Muslim leaders of Africa)--signed under Adams in 1797. It explicitly said US was NOT a Christian nation: Washington's administration even negotiated a treaty with the Muslim rulers of north Africa that stated explicitly that the United States was not founded on Christianity. The pact, known as the Treaty with Tripoli, was approved unanimously by the Senate in 1797, under the administration of John Adams. Article 11 of the treaty states, "he government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion…."

5. Thank you. I have never read of this and..
I have been looking for something that shows Adams did not believe this was designed to be a Christian nation. Many people have pointed to his personal letter as proof of his faith and then made the great leap that he intended this to be a devoutly Christian nation. I now have the rebuttal that I was looking for. If anyone has more let me know.

Here's one source from many on the web:

The article itself is well worth reading, as is the Stephen Gould home-page.

3. Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli
signed in 1796 by John Adams, begins with the phrase:
Since this is in no way a Christian nation...
