Are the majority of DUers Anti-Native American?
Edited on Sun Aug-24-08 03:06 PM by Bobbieo
I am disappointed and somewhat insulted that DUers can not be
bothered with a post that stresses the lenghts some Native Americans will go to become part of the Democratic process. It's a real first for them!!!

Duers will devote their time and energy on insults to John McCain and his wife and houses but no one seems to care about the 2 million plus INDN voters who can possibly elect Obama to the presidency Believe it or not - we NEED all the votes we can get.

For anyone interested in the article:

Sorry - My dyslexia got in the way again. Edited the link1111

2. Thanks for the link. I was watching with some great interest earlier this year
when the Lokota Sioux declared the USA had not held up its end of the treaties and then seceded. Who can blame them for that?

8. Me, too.
Did you catch that video of Russel Means describing his plan for Lakota independence? His plan includes becoming an exporter of wind generated electrical energy.

so excited by that. There were some issues of actually getting the electricity out to companies and customers, but I hope they can work that out because it would be a great way of making some money and caring for the planet all at once.

26. Ya gotta see this.
I will try to find a link. This guy has a way of thinking that is beyond inspiring.

Native American culture is something I have come to view as a vital resource, which we are completely neglecting to heed or nurture.

38. Russell Means
Traveler,
I know that many things that Russell Means says sound inspiring, but place your inspiration in the ideas, not the man. I agree that there are many beliefs in NDN cultures that hold relevancy to modern problems and teachings that would benefit many societies. However, I am just a little leery of people like Means. He sometimes strikes me as a "do as I say and not as I do" person. In 1998 Means was charged by the Dine (Navajo) Nation with beating up an elder. He has even tried to beat this rap by challenging the sovereign authority of the Dine Nation to prosecute him for crimes he committed in their land. NDN people have high regard for elders and for our sovereignty. We (NDN people) have a hard enough time trying to protect our elders and our sovereignty from the things that threaten them without having one of our own acting against the beliefs and culture we have had since the beginning of time. Here is a link to AIM's (American Indian Movement) opinion of Means. He does not hold the regard in NDN country that mainstream society holds of him. I do not believe that Means is a completely horrible person or that he is completely misleading people. But I would rather people see him as he is, rather than how he often wants people to see him.

3. Don't be insulted
and thanks for posting the link. I doubt I am the only DU'er who feels that this country could use a stiff dose of Native American heart and Native American backbone right about now. There's just a LOT going on right now that has people wound up tight.

23. Ditto Traveler
I was fortunate enough to take a few Native American history classes while at University to round out my Poli Sci degree. A great book that I've leant out to many people? In The Absence of the Sacred; The Failure of Technology and the Survival of the Indian Nations by Jerry Mander. It's still oh so relevant - if not more so - today.

28. While being treated for PTSD
an ex-Green Beret type introduced me to a gaggle of Native Americans more or less led by a Winnebago medicine man whose answer to everything began with throwing my pale Irish ass into a sweat lodge and cooking me to a turn. These guys did me more good than hundreds of hours of therapy.

Yeah. Native American knowledge is relevent. Very. Perhaps crucial to the survival of our own culture. How ironic is that? We damn near wipe them out ...

31. Ahh
I had the joys of doing a Ted Silverhand retreat a few years back. Funny - my dad is a Former Green Beret who as part of his 'gig' lived with the Mountain people in Vietnam. He's Black/Irish/Cherokee Indian. He loved those people he lived with. They kept him centered with their 'old ways'. Maybe because he had a mother who treated him with the 'old ways' - as passed down to her by her mother - eh?

It's indigenous peoples the world over. But since I live in America - it's the ones in America I must say - we need their common sense and old ways more than ever.

A mega-site of Bible, Christian and religious information and studies. By God's mercy, one of the largest Bible-centered sites on the web (app. 6000 pgs). If it's in the Bible, it should be on this site.

except to ask if the majority of DUers were prejudiced against NA's.

My post was obviously a joke, since the Washington's fan base is rather small, and rightfully so.

7. no one's going to do it for you
If you want people to care, you might try asking, instead of criticizing people for not
filling a gap that you detect.

Just because people don't read your mind, doesn't mean they don't care about this issue.

Everyone has stuff to do and think about, its up to YOU to get the word out why they
should be involved in this issue.

Ever thought that maybe people aren't aware of this problem you refer to?

I think there's an art to thread title writing that I have not yet mastered

I've seen a post get one or 2 replies, then someone else posts the exact same thing with different wording or more information and it gets 20+ recs and dozens of replies

DU is weird that way

18. Waitaminute there are more than 112,000 members and only the Admins know
how many new posts per day.

Sometimes you need to kick your own stories or maybe work on how you present them.

(Now, your bitching-slash-guilt trip method seems to have worked, but I don't know how long it will remain effective.)

Maybe other members have some hints for you on how to get your stories noticed.

Good luck to you and yours,
:hi:
