70% would oppose Alito if he would overturn Roe (Raw Story from WSJ)
While Americans are divided on the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States, 70% would oppose his confirmation if he were to vote to make abortion illegal, the Wall Street Journal reports today.

Excerpts from the Journal's piece follow:

Almost equal thirds of all adults believe that Judge Alito should be confirmed (34%), should not be confirmed (31%) or say they aren't sure (34%), according to the poll. A majority of Republicans (65% vs. 9%) favor his confirmation, the polls shows, while a plurality of Democrats (48% vs. 14%) oppose it, and Independents are split (34% for confirmation; 38% against).

However, nearly 70% of those surveyed in the online poll of 1,961 adults would oppose Judge Alito's confirmation if they thought he would vote to make abortion illegal. That percentage rises among Democrats (86%) and Independents (74%), compared with 22% of Republicans. More than half of Republicans polled say they would support his confirmation if they thought he would vote to make abortion illegal, compared with 14% of Democrats.

2. But You'll Never Get A Straight Answer From Him On It
They'll ask during the confirmation hearings, but I doubt he'll answer. In my opinion, King george knows what his thoughts are, and is secure in the fact when the time comes, his boy will do him proud. But he would have to be an honest person to give a straight answer, so he won't.

3. So where the hell are they?
Being a mbr of Emily's List, Planned Parenthood, the Democratic Party, DU, MoveOn and other assorted groups - it can sure be lonely in this never-ending slugfest to preserve the rights of women to control their own bodies. It certainly feels like a losing battle to the loud and never-tiring zealots on the other side.

If this many garden-variety American citizens want to keep the constitutional right of women to control their own bodies legal (albeit barely accessible anymore);
WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY?
Present company excluded, of course.

No one wants to speak up for us women when it counts, before we lose our legal right to our own bodies!

Are they just poll voting in secret to avoid scrutiny?
Will they simply shrug their shoulders when our bodies become subject to the dominion of The State??? :argh:

4. But Bush has a MANDATE! And POLITICAL CAPITAL! Why oh why then...
can't Alito just come right out and say he'll outlaw abortion and contraception and sodomy and freedom of religion and the right to vote?
