Condoms and Sexually-Transmitted Infections
"Polarization of opinion about condoms may finally be starting to abate, as scientific evidence mounts that their use can reduce the risk of most sexually transmitted infections, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. In the past, proponents of condom use were often pitted against those arguing that the best way to ensure 100 percent protection against sexually transmitted infections was to abstain from sexual intercourse until marriage and then to refrain from extramarital sex. Certainly, the latter approach would offer 100 percent protection if everyone adhered to it. Fortunately, common ground is now being reached, as it becomes clearer that for many people, neither abstinence until marriage and subsequent faithfulness nor consistent condom use alone is a practical preventive solution...."

2. It will be interesting if the MSM reports this
The New England Journal of Medicine is a mainstay publication of medicine. What they are reporting is a contradiction of what the administration has been saying in reference to condems. They REFUSE to distribute condems in countries where HIV is epidemic, saying abstinese is the answer

As we kill our people in war, and with their false science, will PEOPLE WAKE-UP?

3. Abstinence only has shown itself to be ineffective
This will be interesting as the right wingers try to go for no sex, knowing it's not a reality.

8. The MSM are reporting it. Unfortunately, headlines are misleading.

Condoms don't prevent the spread of HIV, they slow it down. But in the study, in the course of a year, some women using condoms exclusively still contracted HIV from their partners. The number was high enough that eventually, most women will get the virus, even with condom use.

This is because the tiny tiny holes in the condom are larger than the virus. I don't understand why someone isn't designing a condom with holes small enough to prevent the virus from passing.

For example, one misleading headline read: Condoms Found to Block a Virus Harmful to Women
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/22/health/22condom.html
<snip>
In the study, which independent experts said was the most conclusive to examine the role of condoms in preventing infection with the virus, women whose male partners used condoms every time they had sexual intercourse had less than half the rate of infection as did women whose partners used condoms less than 5 percent of the time.
<snip>
In the study, the researchers followed 82 female students at the University of Washington ages 18 through 22 from the time they said they had their first sexual intercourse with a male partner.

Every two weeks, the women electronically filed information about their daily sexual behavior and condom use to a protected Web site. Every four months, the researchers tested the women for papillomavirus and early indications of cancer. A researcher also conducted a personal interview.

The researchers used certain statistical measures to determine the findings in the study. For example, no malignant or precancerous cervical lesions were detected in 32 patient years at risk among women reporting 100 percent condom use by their partners. That compared with 14 such lesions in 97 patient years at risk among women whose partners did not use condoms or who used them less consistently.
<snip>

NOTE: The crucial measure regarding whether HPV is transmitted is not the number of malignant or precancerous cervical lesions - it is whether or not HPV is transmitted. The cellular changes caused by HPV can take years to decades to occur.

Note the sentence "women whose male partners used condoms every time they had sexual intercourse had less than half the rate of infection as did women whose partners used condoms less than 5 percent of the time". This is the crucial part. This sentence says that despite condom use, some women did get infected - albeit at half the rate of women who didn't use condoms more than 5% of the time.

The lesson to be learned: Condoms prevent against some, but not all, STDs; keep getting those pap smears if you are sexually active.

10. To tell someone...
...esp. a teenager not to have sex is, in my opinion, to make an unreasonable demand on that person. Sex is part of the human experience and we are wired to desire it. Some people are able to abstain (or, perhaps, they are unable to find a willing partner), but not a good number. Given that people are going to have sex, and given that condoms are some of the best protections we have against the spread of STDs when it comes to sex, it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out we should be distributing these damn things en masse.

Unfortunately, our compatriots on the right seem to think that if you teach kids about safe sex, that means they're going to have it more. Again, unfortunately, our compatriots on the right don't realize that studies have shown safe sex education a) does not translate to an increase in sexual activity among teens, b) leads to a reduction in STD rates and c) reduces the number of abortions performed.

11. I was thinking...
I was thinking, which they is bad...because it can lead you to something worse...a conclusion. So I am wondering how many people are actually immune to HIV? I know it might be a tad off topic, but I was thinking...
