A Little Adversity Bodes Well for Those With Chronic Back Pain, Study Suggests
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/08/100805172947.htm

"A new study by researchers at the University at Buffalo and the University of California, Irvine, to be published in the September issue of the journal Pain, reveals that, for people with chronic back pain, having a little adversity in your life can be protective and beneficial.

These individuals experience less physical impairment and spend less time in doctor's offices or health clinics, says the study's author Mark Seery, PhD, assistant professor of psychology at UB, who emphasizes that the key to the benefit is the experience of "some" prior adverse events as opposed to many or none at all.

"This study of 396 adults with chronic back pain (CBP) found that those with some lifetime adversity reported less physical impairment, disability and heavy utilization of health care than those who had experienced either no adversity or a high level of adversity," Seery explains.

"The data suggest that adversity-exposure also may protect against psychiatric disturbances that occur with CBP," Seery says, "and additional analyses found no alternative explanations of our findings."

Uh, no comment.

1. I just want to say that being in pain is not acceptable-NOT EVER!
Time to fund those dealing with pain.

7. This topic would be my personal issue
I have horrible chronic back pain post fusion at L5-S1. Just gawd awful even with Lyrica, Scalixin, and Norco, daily. I am virtually uninsurable. I pay out of pocket $300.00 or more every month for meds. Hey, I have been through hell in my life and it all makes a person more philosophical and able to be Zen about your troubles. The drugs take the edge off but attitude gets you through.

12. Good lluck... going for a Laminectomy L3-L5 in about 2 weeks
at Community General. Hope to feel something other than tingling, numbness in my legs and be able to walk better sans crutches or quad cane.

8. I had chronic back pain..
...that was brought on by two pregnancies. I had two babies within 15 months. The sciatica and back pain was so unbearable. I remember hurting
so bad I was crying--and I put a blanket on my legs and the blanket hurt. That's how painful and raw my nerves were.

I went to the ER and ended up having an MRI. I was 5 months pregnant. They found a bulging disc at L4-L5. I had surgery the next
morning--yes, while I was pregnant (and taking care of a 10-month old that I was still breastfeeding).

Post surgery, I woke up feeling like a new person. Since then, I have rarely had to see a doctor. That was eight years ago. I don't sweat the small
stuff and I appreciate my health. After dealing with incessant, mind-blowing pain for so long--each day without it is a gift.

I wish everyone with back pain could find relief. It is just terrible. Online support boards help. Others are always so informed
and gracious about educating people and trying different alternatives.

I hope everyone with back pain can find some relief.

13. I would think that anyone with chronic back pain would rejoice if they
only experienced "a little" adversity. :eyes:
