Does this seem ethical at all?

>>Allerca's GD cat

Allerca is a company launched in 2004 to produce pets free of the major allergens, Fel d 1 (cats) and Can f 1 (dogs). Prices for cats range from $6,950 to $16,000 and dogs are available for $8,950.

The problem is that removing these proteins from the skin, saliva, and other secretions may not be enough, says Dr. Sublett. Animals can produce other symptom-triggering allergens.

"Both dogs and cats have what we call minor allergens, so it's not only the major allergens," he says. "Most people have a sensitivity to minor allergens too."

*NOTE*: They do not mention how they are removing the proteins from the skin, saliva, etc. :wtf:

They are being bred with gene manipulation.

Some cat and dog breeds are already naturally hypoallergenic; not the product of gene manipulation and breeding and being SOLD and ADVERTISED ONLINE.

I fear that by selling these types of pets that it will lead to the practice of more puppy mills popping up if not already the case.

16. I'm not thrilled with the genetic manipulation
but there is no truly naturally hypo-allergenic pet.

There are some that are tolerated better by allergy sufferers than others, I believe, but that's as far as it goes.

2. "Five percent of our clients return to purchase a second pet."
" With the precarious state of the economy when even banks can fail, how is my payment secured?

For your security and peace of mind, your payment is held in an independent escrow account at Escrow.com and released to us only when you receive your kitten or puppy and are 100% satisfied that you don't have any allergic reactions (see How To Purchase page for details)."

" Is there any way to visit an ALLERCA pet or the breeding facility prior to purchase?
For security reasons, we do not provide public access to our breeding facilities (see the first section on this page about security threats we have received in the past)."

"The LIFESTYLE PETS GD kittens do continue to express Fel d1, (the known allergen that is present in saliva, fur, dander etc.) but at a different molecular weight."

So, sounds iffy to me, but hey, I'm uppity.

9. nothing better to do with close to $30,000.00 I guess
that could well be the final cost by the time they have racked up all of the "fees, etc. etc. ad infinitum."

You'd thing the recession might have places like this in a bit of trouble but I guess not ...............

10. I had an adorable Maltese that was suppose to fit that description
My allergies are terrible.
Two sinus surgeries and Allergy Shots now ever week.

As soon as that lovely pet steps outside and walks in the grass -- bingo, they bring it into the house and into your nose etc.

11. IIRC these animals are genetically engineered. I wonder what delightful and
bizarre medical problems they have because of such frankensteinian tinkering........

14. breeding of cats and dogs
I don't think there are many cats or dogs today that don't have some genetic engineering - through breeding - in their background. But this place sounds like a puppy mill with that no visiting for "security"

15. Selective breeding is not genetic engineering.
Even selective breeding is problematic, because people are short-sighted and breed for single characteristics, allowing weaknesses to perpetuate and spread outside that one characteristic.

You're right, though, about the suspicious "no visiting." I want to visit the place any puppy I bring home was born and socialized in.

He was tested (skin test) for various allergens and I gave him shots once a week.
