CANCER 'CODE' IS CRACKED
SCIENTISTS believe they have made a major breakthrough in cancer treatment after cracking the “code” behind the disease.

They have discovered the body’s immune system can kill cancer cells within a window occurring every 12 to 14 days.

By giving low-dose treatment at exactly the right time, researchers believe they have, against the odds, succeeded in halting the spread of advanced cancer.

Professor Michael Quinn has led the trial in patients with advanced ovarian cancer and suggests it could signal the most exciting development since the introduction of chemotherapy in the Fifties.

5. To one taking chemo and getting sick as a dog I sure hope so.
I ached so bad for four days and couldn't get out of bed after the last treatment. Probably won't be available for a long time. But thank the goodness it will help others.

10. I was reading about this on breastcancer.org. I got the impression that it could be
available since the drugs used are already approved (the same) just used at different doses and intervals.

For example, right now I take Xeloda 2 weeks on and one week off.

All of my scans are now clear (yay!), so my doctor may put me on a new regimen of on week on, one week off.

I forgot what the name of this timed therapy is called, but it wouldn't hurt to talk to your doctor about it.

Blessings to you!

that seemed promising. Not solid but a hypothesis to be tested - misleading sensationalist title in the article but thats no surprise. No paper mentioned on the study yet.

a true breakthrough in cancer research.

11. Cancer also can become immune to treatment,
It may be from the dose intense treatment which is given with long intervals between treatment.

17. I fear that the only thing that is really 'cracked' is the Daily Express...
No cure on the immediate horizon; but there are some important steps forward. Here's hoping that it will really come to something!

20. I wonder why they do not have this published in a reputable journal
When they scientists appear to go from discovery to mass media, I get suspicious. It may be that the article simply did not include that information.

23. they are in trials now
It seems they are commenting on the results they are having to date. It sounds like a sort of Phase I trial with ovarian cancer patients, and they are pleased with the results, but I don't think it is over yet. In this particular case, I am not sure what the incentive would be to lie. There isn't a stock price involved.

25. I have the same suspicions when scientific stories are disseminated
through main stream media sources. The regular media has a way of butchering scientific findings and presenting things in an overly simplistic manner. Where a scientist says "A may cause B", the media tends to say things like "A can cause B", which is entirely different.

I hope that these findings are a good step towards a real cure, but cancer is so complex and there are so many varieties of it, I'm not optimistic.
