Birdflu:seal the Americas: Oceans perfect barrier: few could try crossing
Edited on Fri May-19-06 05:11 PM by oscar111
Our Atlantic and Pacific oceans are the perfect barriers against anyone with birdflu trying to come to North or South America.

Few have yachts able to cross the oceans. Any who try, would easily be spotted by satellites or just binoculars from shore, and could be met by US gunboats.

These two great oceans are much better barriers to use, than the Mexican or Canadian border fences. {either could be used.. the oceans are just easier}.

============================
7,000,000 LIVES SAVED

Keeping the birdflu out of all of the Americas would save about 7 million lives. {my estimate based on Bush's two million figure for just the US.}

Any who claim that 18 months of trade are worth 7 million deaths, are just #!@!!#**.

============================
JUST A REPEAT OF TRADE LOSS DURING WW2

At the peak of WW2, I wager that there were eighteen months of close-to-zero trade with Europe and Asia. We, the "breadbasket of the world", can surely do it again to save two million of our own lives this time around. Two million lives is many times our war dead in WW2. Or maybe we have forgotten how to value human life? Bush's plan values trade more than two million lives.
Values trade, and tourism.... tourism means Tammy's tour of Europe.

"But, but, trade can't wait. Tammy can't wait."

Baloney.

=============================
THE OTHER NATIONS OF THE AMERICAS

I hope my many friends in the other american nations, will like the idea. Some will not. I would like to know of any way to let those who disagree, go on their own way while at the same time using the ocean barrier idea to shield the rest of us. I truly don't like the idea of forcing a solution on those out there who disagree with the barrier idea. Some will see it as more american domination.

If you know of a way around this, i have an open mind. I would prefer an arrangement that would allow the "shield" and "no shield" groups to each face the birdflu in their own way.
===========================

TO PRESERVE THE DIGNITY OF EVERY NATION

To avoid the feeling of american dominance, perhaps all the navies of all the nations could take part, perhaps in layers. Ideas invited.

Presently, i see an oceanic shield as the best way to save 7 million, north and south.

=============================
AN EASY WAY TO PUT UP A PERFECT SHIELD

It would be a perfect shield. Not one traveller would get through. No one has both a yacht and bigger guns than the US navy. Airlines will stay home when told to. The shield would begin only after it is clear that rapid human-to-human transmission has begun. The experts say human-to-human birdflu is most likely to begin in asia.

===========================

HOW TO MAKE IT WORK
Remember, ... progressives say "how can this idea be fixed so it will work?". Traditionalists think, "what flaws can i find, so no progress can happen?" If you find a flaw, please be progressive and use your cleverness to also fix it. Are you not clever enough to fix any flaw?

SUMMARY:
The oceanic shield will save 7 million lives.

============================
FOR THOSE WITH MORE TIME TO READ...

Similar sea shields could be used for Australia, Japan, England. But the best, most perfect barrier appears to be the one around the americas. Its weakest point would be the islands between Alaska and Siberia. But even there, our coast guard has long experience from the Cold War, experience in keeping folks from crossing from Siberia to the US. Underwater microphones were put on the sea bed to listen for the sound of boats, according to Newsweek. There, and also in most of the world's oceans as well, from when we wanted to know of the soviet's naval movements. So, many ways to spot sea travellers - microphones, coast guard planes, naval patrols, coastal binoculars and satellites.

A perfect barrier that will save seven million lives.

1. mmmm...whar about migratory birds?
I heard a report this morning on NPR that ornithologists are keeping a close idea on he many migratory birds that go back and forth between North America and Asia. Should we maybe start quarantining those birds?

2. So, have to assume all that was posted means
No planes into the nation, no planes or travel allowed until the crisis is over, no transportation into or inside the nation, all trade and travel stops, and all citizens are quarantined...???

3. Yeah sure
stop all air travel now if you like - prevention sure beats cure. Might also solve a lot of problems worldwide. Suppose you'd better get your troops back first though.:rofl:

4. Oscar adds thoughts on INFRARED SATELLITES to perfect the barrier
all in all, six layers of protection for the coastlines of north and south america.

I have put some new thoughts on the use of IR satellites ...in the forum dealing with NSA satellites.

see..

5. Load of paranoid rubbish
First, it's going to be brought in by birds. Try to stop THEM without totally fucking up what's left of the environment.

Second, what makes you think ANY multinational corporation is going to respect completely sealed borders? Get real.

Third, we can't stop Mexicans, Cubans, Haitians, or anybody crossing from Canada. What makes you think we're going to be able to seal thousands of miles of coastline, much of it rugged and isolated?

Fourth, consider that in 1918 the flu spread around the globe in WEEKS, almost as though they'd had the kind of jet travel we have today. That's the way a pandemic works. You can't stop it with a door, a border guard, a fence, or harsh words from a bunch of Repuglicans in suits.

The only thing you can do is hope our gutted medical system can come up with a vaccine. Don't bet the rent on that, though. Mergers and megamergers have left us with just 4 outfits capable of producing flu vaccine, and none of them is in the US.

7. When it jumps to humans it will be brought by humans
The Jump to humans will most likely occur in some developing country where people live with thier birds (like in rural Turkey or Vietnam). When the birds bring it here the only people that need to be concerned to a high degree are people who raise poultry.
