The latest legal wrangling once again highlights the tension between the federal government, which declares marijuana an illegal controlled substance with no medical value, and the 11 US states allowing medical marijuana for patients with a doctor's recommendation.

"Medical cannabis is necessary for the preservation of Angel Raich's life," said Randy Barnett, the Oakland, California woman's lawyer on Monday.

He later told the three-judge panel of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals that, "If she obeys the law, she will die."

On her doctor's advice, she uses marijuana every couple of hours to ease her pain and bolster a nonexistent appetite.

In DC who is one of just under 20 people part of a government program/study in the 1970s who is and will be (for the rest of his life) supplied with marijuana. He has some sort of fatal disease that only marijuana keeps in check. He is legally allowed to smoke it anywhere he wants and even does so while driving. The government doesn't want to acknowledge the benefits of marijuana so the study was suprressed. He was featured on Penn and Teller's, "Bullshit," program.
