Health Fair with FREE health screenings June 13
Anyone near northwest Arkansas is cordially invited to come join us at our third annual Health Fair Saturday, June 13, from 10-4. It will be held at Future Visions Foundation, 7 miles south of Harrison AR. (PM me for directions) We'll have free health screenings for blood pressure, glucose, lipids, and glaucoma. We'll also have many different booths giving out free samples of products and free services (the neck and shoulder massage by Yasmin is to die for!). There will be a raffle for things like a Gazelle exercise machine, and organically grown heirloom plants will be for sale.

This is the highlight of the year--hope many of you can come!

1. Out of curiousity, if they find problems what happens?
Surely folks going to a free health fair probably can't afford treatment?

2. Don't be too sure about that!
Lots of folks don't care at all about going to the doctor unless something is wrong. But they will go to a free health fair. I think they are a great idea. It's not just the poor that attend at all. Of course, a lot depends on the location, and the demographics.

I think Ayesha has said, though, that the Foundation tries to provide as much treatment as possible for folks that can't afford much.

4. You are right, Celebration
You see a lot of folks that aren't poor coming to this--many look at this as a quick way to give them peace of mind that doesn't involve making an appointment with their MD. I'd say that only about 10% of the folks who come are people who are really down and out. Sadly, many of those kind of folks somehow get it in their head that they don't deserve the "charity", and have to be coaxed into coming.

3. A lot of things
first of all, if it is glaucoma related, Doc sets them up an appointment with her at her eye clinic. She works out payments with them. If it the other stuff, she often recommends things to do on the spot (for example, if lipids are just a bit high, she will tell them to get Omega-3 fish oil tablets and suggests they take x number a day), or tells them to call for an appointment. We allow people to pay out over time or even trade work of various sorts in exchange for the office visits (that's how I was able to pay for my initial visit--I created the Foundation website). If they can't afford lab tests, we have a Laboratory Assistance Grants fund which will pay for the testing. We really make it as affordable as possible.
