Oily fish may reduce prostate cancer spread: study
http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=healthNews&storyID=2006-03-21T180544Z_01_L20566025_RTRIDST_0_HEALTH-CANCER-PROSTATE-DC.XML

Dr Mick Brown, chief scientist in the research group, said the results of the research published in the British Journal of Cancer suggest a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids might help to inhibit the spread of the disease in men with early prostate cancer.

...........................

"Omega-6 fats, found in vegetable oils, nuts and seeds, increased the spread of tumor cells into bone marrow. This invasion was blocked by omega 3 fats -- the ones found in oily fish," Brown said in a statement.

"It is possible to have a healthy balance of these two types of fat -- we only need about half as much omega-3 as omega-6 -- that will still stop cancer cells from spreading," he added.

The researchers believe omega-3 fatty acids interfere with functions of omega-6, which cancer cells may use as a source of energy, and prevent them from spreading beyond the prostate gland.

1. Phew.
Did anyone else have a momentary worry about the "application" of the oily fish and become relieved to hear it was to be taken in your diet?

2. Specially if you lather that fish up with hot sauce
and have a big old hunk of onion on the side. You may be somewhat offensive for awhile but if you are taking care of your prostate, the smell should be forgiven.

4. Unh unh. Omega-3's are also found in flaxseed oil
and hemp seed oil. Available in most natural or health food stores. Also much cheaper than fish, and you can take it every day without fearing mercury or heavy-metal poisoning.
