TORONTO — Surgical treatment aimed at preventing the onset of strokes in high-risk patients has led to an unexpected outcome: helping to restore lost brain tissue, according to new Canadian research.

..."Around 11 months after patients in the study underwent brain bypass surgery designed to help restore blood flow to the brain, there was an unexpected discovery."

..."To our surprise, not only did they benefit from not having big strokes, but they also regained the brain tissue that they had lost," said Tymianski.

There was an average 5.1 per cent increase in thickness of the brain tissue observed on MRI scans."....

1. This is amazing.
Also scary when one considers how expensive surgeries could get.

2. I think so too.
I never expected that brain tissue lost could be regained, and, as a possible deterrent to Alzheimer's and dementia ... this is wild. After all the studies, I imagine the tricky part will be how far to go with it.
