EPA reevaluates and lowers safe levels of Fluoride

HHS’ proposed recommendation of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water replaces the current recommended range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams. This updated recommendation is based on recent EPA and HHS scientific assessments to balance the benefits of preventing tooth decay while limiting any unwanted health effects. These scientific assessments will also guide EPA in making a determination of whether to lower the maximum amount of fluoride allowed in drinking water, which is set to prevent adverse health effects.

The new EPA assessments of fluoride were undertaken in response to findings of the National Academies of Science (NAS). At EPA’s request, NAS reviewed new data on fluoride in 2006 and issued a report recommending that EPA update its health and exposure assessments to take into account bone and dental effects and to consider all sources of fluoride. In addition to EPA’s new assessments and the NAS report, HHS also considered current levels of tooth decay and dental fluorosis and fluid consumption across the United States.

2. Additional Reporting>>>
It appears that the EPA is responsive to this organization >
http://www.ewg.org/comm/proposed-federal-cap-fluoride-water-will-not-protect-public-health

"We urge you to act expeditiously to lower the proposed maximum limit of fluoride in tap water, to expand research efforts to determine the benefits and toxicity of fluoride and to intensify your efforts to educate the public on the proper use of toothpaste and other topically-applied fluoride treatments."

And for those who are not Fox-phobic (Personally, I always verify ALL news reports with more than one source. Big girl stuff.) >
http://www.foxnews.com/health/2011/02/22/epa-reverses-fluoride/

There have always been fluoride critics who questioned the chemical’s safety and challenged the decision to use fluoride in municipal drinking water. According to the Los Angeles Times, back in 2005, “the heads of 11 EPA unions, including those representing the agency’s scientists, demanded that EPA reduce the permissible level of added fluoride in water to zero, citing research suggesting it can cause cancer. Other studies have pointed to neurotoxicity and hormone disruption from excessive fluoride”

3. Too much natural fluoride: mottled teeth
I grew up in the Texas Panhandle, which has too much natural fluoride in the water. We all drank the same water but not all of us developed fluorosis. I was one of the unlucky ones - my teeth were mottled and, according to my dentist, seemed to have been sand-blasted. He wasn't familiar with fluorosis and apparently thought I was bulemic. I ended up having the front teeth capped, not for cosmetic reasons (though that was a plus) but because the "sand blasting" thinned them to the point that they were going to break.

Of course it's nice to also review these quotes from the article as well...

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention named the fluoridation of drinking water one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century."

and

"There are several reasons for the changes seen over time, including that Americans have access to more sources of fluoride than they did when water fluoridation was first introduced in the United States in the 1940s. Water is now one of several sources of fluoride. Other common sources include dental products such as toothpaste and mouth rinses, prescription fluoride supplements, and fluoride applied by dental professionals. Water fluoridation and fluoride toothpaste are largely responsible for the significant decline in tooth decay in the U.S. over the past several decades."

Fluoride remains an important and essential part of modern health care, and this article confirms that. Thanks for posting! :hi:

7. allergic to fluoride
I have been avoiding this crap my entire life as much as possible.

The last time I got hit with it was from a dentist who did not believe me and had her hygienist apply some sort of crap that stuck to my teeth. My mouth began burning something fierce and I washed it off when I got home which was not a easy task; seems it was some sort of intense fluoride loaded crap. :puke:

I then developed "angular cheilitis" from it which some 6 mos. later I am still fighting with.

I hate fluoride and my teeth aren't about to fall out from not using it, nope.

I don't use toothpaste - have found some very good alternatives to the fluoride loaded crap being pushed by the ADA, etc.

8. So you must not eat or drink anything, huh?
Tea - organic black, green, or white tea - contains decent amounts of fluoride. At least trace amounts are found in EVERYTHING you eat or drink. So you're allergic to fluoride, huh?

9. "angular cheilitis" ?
Aren't lesions at the corner of the mouth usually a symptom of either nutritional deficiency or a yeast infection?

11. I try to avoid it as much as I can
Edited on Wed Mar-30-11 06:28 AM by CountAllVotes
It is a "sensitivity" I should have said. I know it naturally occurs (duh). I just don't want more of it if possible as I am overloaded with it after having lived somewhere as a child that heavily fluoridated the water.

Re: the angular cheilitis - they don't know exactly what causes it but has been linked to dental procedures and that is when it appeared, after this glue like fluoride crap was stuck on my teeth and this burning started up. A few days later this began.

Some people have a very difficult time getting rid of angular cheilitis my doctor said.

12. But you claimed an allergy. Why? Were you exaggerating for effect?
And didn't expect anyone to call you on it? And even if you have a sensitivity, you are exposed to it in everything. How can you possibly blame a dental procedure?

Give me a break would you? To me it is the equivalent of an allergy but worse being they don't know what causes this crap!

16. What is the mechanism by which fluoride protects against cavities?
Can any of our defenders of the wonders of fluoridated water explain this mechanism to our grateful reader? Thanks.

17. I must say, you've done a brilliant job displaying the anti-fluoride mindeset.
You don't even know the role the element plays in dental health, yet you're against it. Fucking hilarious.
