There was no formal city vote to join the lawsuit that originated in the city of San Francisco, but there are letters from Mayor Jerry Sanders, Councilwoman Toni Atkins and City Attorney Michael Aguirre stating the city's position.
The state Supreme Court decided Wednesday to hear a trio of challenges, including San Francisco's, which is a case supported by a growing number of cities and counties.
Aguirre said the council wasn't required to take additional action since it had already approved sending a friend-of-court brief to the Supreme Court before it ruled in May that same-sex marriages must be allowed in California. The council opposed Proposition 8, as well.
