SUBWAY! Everyone go get a sandwich in support of this!
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4485083

Because of an individual franchise owner's contribution to the Yes on 8 campaign, SUBWAY responded to a blogger's demand by reprimanding the franchise owner and adding clear GLBT language to their non-discrimination policy.

Go SUBWAY! :patriot:

"We are changing the discrimination policy language and that includes anything we add through headquarters human resources, not just in the field," said DiNello. "The company used the exact language you gave us," referring to BlogActive's request to add both 'sexual orientation and gender identity.'"

"This is a textbook example of how a company should react when they realize that one of its operating units has done something wrong. What was outrageous behavior by one franchisee has resulted in a letter to owners of 30,000 stores and a corporate policy change for the better," said Rogers, "I am particularly happy that the company added both sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of protected individuals under the corporate non-discrimination policies."

Thanks PageoneQ, hope you don't mind my cross-posting this here. We need to support our allies!

1. I was just thinking how a Subway meatball sandwich would be great for lunch today
Yes, I think about lunch at 8:45AM. Weird.

But good for Subway! That's wonderful to hear!

4. In the book "Fastfood Nation" Subway was cited for being ugly to it's workers and
the franchise owners. Owners of one franchise don't really make a lot of money. Just a little FYI.

When a company makes changes for the better based on this kind of pressure, we should support that change.

17. Such nice news!
Love Subway, and now I feel almost obligated to eat a Meatball Sub Luncheon For Equality! We love Subway anyhoo, so thank all that is holy they are on our side. That would be one personally devastating boycott, as we crave the Subs fortnightly.

20. A chain doesn't want the franchisee to use the chain's name for political donations.
That makes sense to me. Each franchisee represents the chain in some manner and usually signs a contract for things like using the name of the chain for anything official.

23. People buy franchise rights and it's contractual
use of the brand name, otherwise, it would just be any subsandwich shop.

The way I understand it, you do have obligations not to ruin the parent companies name, plus a whole lot of rules so that the brand remains standardized from town to town.

31. Right, but did the franchisee say "this is money from Subway"?
I thought he was just a franchisee giving his money in his own name.

22. Good for them, but
as a Philadelphia, I find them appalling.

Sort of like buying gumbo in New Orleans at TGIF, or Italian Food in NYC at Olive Garden ()

But really - everyone living somewhere outside the Philadelphia Metro Area (somewhere that doesn't offer authentic hoagies, cheese steaks, and meatball sandwiches on every corner) should DEFINITELY patronize Subway!

24. Subway is to hoagies what Olive Garden is to Italian food.
But, when there's nothing authentic around, Subway sandwiches aren't that awful, as long as you load up on spicy mustard and banana peppers. Can't say the same about Olive Garden.
