Prop. 8 victors upset by personal attacks

Supporters of Proposition 8 won the election but now are frustrated because they are still fighting for their cause.

A week after a majority of voters passed the controversial measure to ban same-sex marriage, the conflict continues – in the courts, at protests and in personal attacks.

"I'm frustrated by what's going on," said Dave Leatherby, owner of the Leatherby Family Creamery in Sacramento, commenting on the protests and court battles.

"Let's move on. I always told my children that once a rule was made, you have to abide by it. I think it should be the same in this circumstance."

Leatherby and his family donated about $20,000 for the passage of Proposition 8. A devout Catholic and father of 10, Leatherby supported the measure for religious reasons. He said his business has been targeted by bloggers as a result, and that he is particularly confused because his business has participated in the annual gay pride Rainbow Festival.

5. What a twit
"Let's move on. I always told my children that once a rule was made, you have to abide by it. I think it should be the same in this circumstance."

So if we banned his religion or, say, regulated the number of children he could have he'd accept the ruling and move on? Right. :eyes:

6. Nobody cares about boycotts.
They are too subtle. You need to get groups to picket each location with signs and pamphlets to pass out to anyone whose interested.

18. Yeah...try applying that attitude to slavery or segregation!
Unwavering acceptance of all authority's legitimacy. That's what made the Third Reich possible, and that's what the founders of this country were afraid of.

12. Dave Leatherby you are a Religious Bigot
Why should your religions sacred rites be promoted and accepted by the law but my Buddhist sacred rites not be given the same status from the Government. Please stop trying to interfere with my religious freedoms and focus on your own life.

Dave Leatherby is as much a bigot as those that supported apartheid in South Africa and separate-but-equal in the segregated American South.

16. Once a rule was made you have to abide by it? Then why did you overturn gay rights, Dave?
Seems to me that the courts made a ruling last spring that allowed gay people to get married, and thousands of them did. Then some out-of-staters decided to stick their noses in California's business and came up with Prop 8, to which Dave happily contributed.

Looks like Dave broke his own rule.

17. And check out this quote for cognitive dissonance....
"Protesting is a time-honored American tradition," said Ned Dolejsi, executive director of the California Catholic Conference. Catholic leaders were active in the Yes on 8 campaign. "But it's unfortunate when it steps over into religious bigotry or harassment."

So it's not bigotry or harassment to treat gay people like pariahs, but it is bigotry and harassment to complain when the majority takes away the rights of a minority?

I don't think so. The reign of Bush and newspeak is over.

that churches should lose their 501c tax exempt status.

21. Yeah
Anytime they say something hateful it's OK because they're just expressing their deeply held beliefs. But if anybody dare say anything against them it's religious bigotry. Funny how they can use religion both as a weapon against us, and as a shield for themselves against any criticism or question of what they do/say.

Well, it is my deeply held belief that they are intolerant bigots. They can suck on that.

22. I've lived in Sac my whole life. Leatherby's sucks.
I thought it was a Mormon place actually. They're goofy and name the sundaes after the owners children. The ice cream is nothing special. I'd choose any number of places over this. Or I'd rather have generic ice cream from the supermarket.

24. Well I'm sure Mr. Leatherby will be saddened to hear that.
Even worse news for him, is the fact his business has been officially targeted for boycott.

I'll hit Gunther's or Vics.

No more Leatherbys.

27. So, this is great that people are taking efforts on this.
I'm so glad. Boycotts aren't usually effective, but this is so high visibility that it may work.

PS - Gunther's is great! Haven't gone there since I was a kid, but I loved it!
