West Virginia Southern Baptists call for constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
The Governor has declined to convene a special session of the legislature, noting that WV already has laws on the books that ban gay marriage. I was encouraged by the number of comments in support of LGBT rights. If push comes to shove, this proposed amendment could be defeated in WV, for a number of reasons.

1. The American Taliban has certainly found it's issue, haven't they?
We have EXTREME TERRORISTS in our country -- they just wear a cross on their sweaters. :sarcasm:

2. Well there's a shock.
I am sure those enabling such a ban much more prefer the raping Ned Betty-like characters such a more appealing option.

3. Every session, the same loon in NC tries that
My partner and I wrote our local rep and senator who both wrote back that the state had more pressing issues and that there was already a law on the books. Thankfully, the bill died in committee. But that never stops the same loons from trying the same grandstanding "play to the base" every session.

Never drop your guard. They don't ever, ever let up. There's no vacation from crazy.

18. My mama always said
if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything. It's time for them to STFU. The rest of us are tired of it. They've got nothing but the same old destructiveness, never anything constructive.

barring the Southern Baptists (or any other religious organization) from trying to coerce the legislature into worthless amendments.

A$$HOLES!

13. Thanks!
Took me a while to get over here. But, now that we've conquered DC, there's little for me to do elsewhere.

6. Ban divorce
All of these pro-marriage amendments need to affect both heterosexuals and homosexuals. Start banning gay marriage and straight divorce and let's see how much support is out there to "protect" marriage.

I am a gay man and I am anxiously awaiting the right to marry here in Iowa ... decision forthcoming this spring by the Iowa Supreme Court in a case in which marriage was legalized about 14 months ago.

14. You can fuck your sister, but don't let them queers marry!
Jimmy Carter resigned from the Southern Baptist Convention years ago because of their intolerance and hate speech.

16. Here we go again.
But this is the first time I've seen where a state already has discriminatory legislation against gay people re: marriage and there are knuckleheads out there who want even more legislation to ban gays from marrying. Did one bigoted hand not communicate with the other bigoted hand about the current laws, or are they just on some extreme form of legislative cruelty???

And we can thank the Southern Baptists for this latest blatant form of discrimination. Eff them! Apparently they didn't get the history memo that our founding fathers were trying to offer us the freedom of religion and the freedom from it - religious tyranny.

I am so sick of this crap!! But for all my increasing anger over this issue, I'm grateful to those Americans of all types, including those in WV, who are speaking out against this discrimination and not supporting it. Altho. I don't share the optimism that if push came to shove it would still be defeated in WV. Aside from the support and money these little-minded, hypocritical, religious nuts have to spend, but because of the potential of voting fraud - and it was WV who received public attention over their voting problems this election involving optical scanners switching votes for Obama to McSame in full view of the voter. When it comes to laws, I believe it ain't over till the fat lady sings.....and she's busy getting her nails done.

17. WV now has a new Democratic Secretary of State
who is expected to pay attention to voting fraud, unlike her Repug tool predecessor. Also, West Virginians have long had an ornery streak when it comes to other people imposing their religion on everyone; there is a "mind your own business" viewpoint that offers us something to work with. And the current Governor is in no hurry to do the Southern Baptists' bidding. There is no direct initiative process in the state. Potential amendments would have to make their way through the legislature, where they could be blocked on procedural grounds. Sure, the legislature has its share of loons (that fascist, hateful sow Kelly Sobonya comes to mind), but they don't have the numbers.

19. I propose we sterilize fundy bigots and other hate mongering, crotch sniffing morons.
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 11:58 PM by Jamastiene
They breed entirely too damn much and I want their noses out of my damn crotch, pronto. We should all eat beans and visit Southern Baptist churches on Christmas and Easter. We can find our worst enemies that way, by seeing who gets the worst wind burn.
