Sherri Shepard and "The View"
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 03:24 AM by RetiredTrotskyite
I received an email from Queers United to which I am linking here:

http://queersunited.blogspot.com/

Being clergy myself I mailed the following to Sherri.

Dear Sherri,

I am very disappointed that you are spreading such blatant misinformation regarding marriage equality. Marriage equality means simply that same-sex couples will be able to marry like everyone else.

Your church will NOT be forced to marry same-sex couples, they will not. Your pastor will NOT be jailed for speaking out against homosexuality, although it is sad that in this day and age, it is sad to see bigotry and misinformation being given to religious Americans in an effort to deny
civil rights to other Americans.

Marriage equality only allows same-sex couples to marry--it does not require the church to marry these couples. Those churches who do not wish to allow same sex-marriage will be allowed to continue their current policies, whilst same sex couples who desire to wed will be able to do so.

You have the freedom in America to believe according to the dictates of your conscience. Same-sex couples should not be denied marriage, however, as Christianity is not and never has been the state religion.

I ask you to pray and think about how you would feel if you were not permitted to marry the man you loved and wished to commit your life to.

I married my spouse in Canada last year. We are both monogamous, completely committed to being together as a married couple until death do us part. We married there because our right to legally be together is unlikely to be taken away.

I would suggest to you and other Christians to attack the real danger to so-called "traditional marriage" and that is divorce. Divorce, not same-sex marriage is the real threat. Currently, the divorce rate in the United States stands at over 50 percent. This is the real scandal, not the desire of same sex couples, such as Del Martin and Phyllis Lyons, who married legally this past June in California after having been together over 50 years.

God is love, not a being who wishes to spread hate and untruths, no matter what some who "serve" might believe. I urge you again to pray and search your heart in this matter.

Blessings,
Bishop Ioan

I urge all LGBT people on here to contact her site about her anti-gay views.

1. Great letter! Thanks for sharing it here, though I fear it will go over her head.
It makes me sick that the writer has to emphasize the monogamy part of his marriage, yet so many straight marriages are full of infidelity. Its not fair. It shouldn't matter if the writer and his husband are the biggest swinging fools or if they have taken vows of chastity. They should have the same rights as Britney Spears, Larry Craig and the soon to be divorced Sherri Shepherd.

2. Oh That Is Rich, Emily Anne....
I wasn't aware of the impending change in Sherri Shepherd's marital status. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

It's OK for straights to engage in nearly endless "serial monogamy" but not OK for loving, committed same-sex couples like Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon to marry after more than fifty years together. This country is just sad.
:-(

3. well, if i was gonna send that stupid woman a letter i would
like to tell her:

hey sherri,
those gay friends of yours? they aren't really your friends--knowing how you *really* think and feel about them--unless they like hanging out with people who think they don't deserve equal treatment and equal rights. maybe your friends like to be thought of as unworthy, or something worse.

and sherri--what a great idea to fuck up *thousands* of people's lives just so you can sleep tight at night knowing your pastor won't be "jailed" for not marrying a gay couple. you know, that is *so* worth it. because no one wants you to worry your little head about something so important.

(what a stupid woman)
(her *and* elizabeth)

4. I Like Your Letter, But....

Sherri's one of these that if you aren't civil and your letter has profanity, then she WILL search out your IP and complain to your ISP. However, my sentiments are pretty much what you wrote above.

She probably won't be able to understand my email to her, but at least one clergyperson weighed in.

6. "The Greeks had Xians cause they threw them to the lions!"

For whatever reason, the ladies on "The View" were discussing ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus this morning. Naturally, talk soon migrated to the topic of religion, and Sherri "I don't know if the world is flat" Shepherd came out to play.

More specifically, to spew ignorance and a complete lack of understanding of basic world history! Discussing whether Christians were around during Epicurus' time (Epicurus lived from 341-270 B.C.), Sherri chimed in, "(The Greeks) had Christians 'cause they threw them to the lions."

When Whoopi tried to cautiously navigate her through the timeline of basic world events, saying, "I think this might predate that," Sherri responded, "I don't think anything predated Christians."

Joy's attempt to explain the Greek-Roman-Christian chronology was futile, as Sherri insisted, "Jesus came first before them." Sherri's argument was all the more powerful due to her convincing "use your finger to write on the table" trick, but she can't fight the facts. Perhaps if Barbara were on today she would have explained THAT WHOLE B.C. THING (you know, as in, Before Christ).
