1. This hetero chick was proud
to sign!! If I'm sickened, infuriated and saddened, I can only imagine how gays, especially those who married in CA, must feel.

And who the hell are the Mormons to stick their noses into other people's marriages? They've waged a century-long battle of their own against persecution for polygamy, which many sects consider a sacred part of their religion. Fucking hypocrites.

Please post this in GD, you will get a huge response there.

3. Done!
It does a fine job of explaining where the church went wrong (in terms of IRS code on the front page).

Also, see my sig line - I urge everyone to visit www.lambdalegal.org, www.aclu.org, and www.invalidateprop8.org.

They have a lot of great information on their web pages right now.

If everyone who voted 'no' on Prop. 8 would make donations to the legal fight, we would be very effective.

I am proud to sign this.

Please keep letting those of us outside of the GLBT community know what we can do to help. I am not as clued in as I would like to be about what I can do to truly make a difference, but am hoping to change that.

18. This would be a great precedent.
The Mormons may have been more directly involved in this travesty than some others, but this is fundamentalist extremism of ALL stripes at work. I’d fucking love to see the rest of them have to sweat their protected tax-free empires every time they start howling about how I’m going to Hell, and anyone who doesn’t agree I belong there will be right there with me.

20. Non profit status for religious organizations is part of federal law, not state law
Specifically, section 501(c)(3) of the United States Tax Code. It would require action at the federal level to strip any religious organization of its non-profit status, and there is no provision allowing for petition initiatives to affect federal law.

24. I think churches are trying to metastasize into the public and legal sphere
I think in general, churches have failed to manipulate society on their own, so they have decided to metastasize into the public and legal sphere, in order to exert influence on people who are not even members of the church.

36. Quick Question - the UU Church supports legislation legalizing Gay Marriage.
Wouldn't the UU tax exempt status also be affected because of their activism?

38. Maybe, and it would be worth it.
Too much activism has occurred through churches, and as far as I am concerned, none of them should be tax-exempt anymore.

48. The fact is that if churches are doing good work,
which idea supporters always fling at me when I suggest religion is anything but 100% FABULOUS, said good work will still qualify for tax-exempt status once all churches are stripped of theirs. I don't grok why this is such a radical idea. There is no inherent reason, other than history, that a church should get tax exempt status in any fashion differently than a normal NGO. And if we did it that way, the evil churches would automatically be on the outside looking in. Not that they couldn't fleece their sheep as they do now, but they would have to pay their fair share to Uncle Sam. If I have to, the evil bastards should have to as well.

45. Add any church that preaches politics from the pulpit.
I agree that they should be removed from Tax Exempt status, So many churches have unfair advantage by preaching from the pulpit.
Mostly siding with the very rich and powerful do you think that is what Jesus wanted? Definitely they need to pay taxes.
