So now he is a Reaper, recapturing evil souls who have somehow escaped Hell. Now he is living, with is two friends in a condo with a gay couple, who are demons, as neighbors.

7. I Liked the Show Before the Writer's Strike, But Haven't Been Back to TV Since.
Edited on Sat Mar-29-08 11:54 PM by Toasterlad
This "gay demon" bit must be a new twist. I'm a little leary of anything "gay" on this show, because consultant Kevin Smith has a decidedly mixed track record when it comes to gay portrayals. One listen to the commentary track of "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" reveals that he thinks his heart's in the right place, but he's got some fundamental misconceptions about homosexuality. Love his stuff otherwise, though. And the kid who plays the lead is cute in a goofy, slacker kind of way.

8. Kevin Smith has a gay brother.
I don't know, Toasterlad. I kind of have to disagree with you...I think Kevin Smith is pretty gay friendly. He was the executive producer of "Small Town Gay Bar", an excellent documentary about gay life in the South. I think Kevin Smith has given largely positive gay and lesbian portrayals in his films. I think one example of that is "Chasing Amy".

9. I'm Aware, Terrya.
I certainly wouldn't call Smith an ENEMY of the "gay community", but his concept of sexuality as something that you can put on or take off like an overcoat deeply offends me. I liked Chasing Amy, but at the very core was the notion that lesbians can be "turned" if they just meet the right guy, an idea that adolescent straight boys have been nurturing since time immemorial. It's a notion that he revisits with "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back", although most of the lesbian material was cut and you really only get the full impact of how seriously he misunderstands this issue by watching the deleted scenes and listening to the commentary.

I hope to Christ I never become one of those people that can't laugh at gay humor, but I can't help but think that Smith's harmless fun is based on some pretty wrong-heading assumptions.

12. I actually identified a LOT with Alyssa Jones
She was going through a lot of questioning, not sure about her sexuality, and kind of caught in between. I've lived parts of my life trying to be totally straight, parts trying to be totally lesbian, but neither fit very well, and her pain was pretty familiar to me. She leans more lesbian than I do, I think, but the portrayal of her friends from both ends of the spectrum was pretty true to my own. I lost a lot of straight friends when I went through my lesbian-identified phase, lost a lot of my gay friends when I finally figured out I was right in the middle. I've had boyfriends who were totally threatened (like Holden McNeil) by the fact that I was bi, and had girlfriends too, and they thought it was something they'd be able to handle, but they couldn't.

14. The Problem I Had With Alyssa Was That She Was Supposed to Be DONE Questioning.
Warning: Chasing Amy Spoilers Galore!!!

When Holden met her, she was at a stage of her life where she had come to terms with who she was...and she identified as a lesbian. She wasn't portrayed as bi, she tells Holden that she loves women exclusively. All the wild, questioning stuff she went through was on the way to where she was, and it was past her. That was the whole point of the movie; she was done with sexual experimentation, and Holden felt he couldn't compete with her history; he tried to play "catch-up" by asking her to revisit a part of her life that was a closed door. That's why she left him. Her lesbianism was actually completely incidental, and fairly explotative: Holden confides in Hooper that he can handle the fact that she's a lesbian (how nice for her!), but that he feels outclassed by her past sexual history. There is not reason, thematically, for her to be a lesbian at all. It comes across as sort of a cheap gimmick. And the fact that Holden DOES manage to get her into bed after she reveals to him that she's gay always struck me as adolescent wish-fulfillment on Smith's part. I think it showed remarkable restraint that he didn't end their relationship by having Holden ask to bring in another WOMAN, instead of Banky. And don't get me started on that speech Alyssa gives about "falling in love with the person", which sounds very sweet and PC, but which comes out of nowhere, considering how the character is depicted til that point.

But I really did like the movie!

10. Yes, he's quite gay friendly, judging by the content of his films, but also statements he's made.
And, if I may say so, quite bear-alicious.

Here's Kevin Smith talking about gay and bears:

13. I've enjoyed it when I've seen it.
I'm mostly an accidental watcher so I don't know when it's on since the writer's strike. If I ran across it I would spend an hour there. Very funny show.
