I also am not sure what a trans woman is, per se

Are you previous male to female,

or female to male.

I am seriously interested in the sensitivities of a "tranny" - hope that's not a dirty word, I don't know

But I do know a guy, going to a girl that I speak with but never discuss the transformation.

I am not bothered with his desire to become a "her" - and have reasonable conversations with him/her.

But I feel awkward as I think it must be one hell of a challenge to pursue that path, and he/she does it quite openly.

I hope the above isn't one of the "bad questions" you should not ask.

And I'm seriously interested in how to cope and not offend this person I speak of.
