Connecticut Gay Couples: Civil Unions Not Working
(Hartford, Connecticut) Gay and lesbian couples told state lawmakers Monday that civil unions are not working and they provided evidence that the indentations of the law are not being followed.

Civil unions became legal in Connecticut in 2005. The accords same-sex couples most of the rights and obligations Connecticut gives married couples. But after more than two years since the law was passed many businesses, hospitals and government agencies still do not recognize them.

A bill introduced by Sen. Andrew McDonald (D) is intended to "clean up" technicalities and loopholes in the law.

Monday the legislature's Judiciary Committee held hearings and was told bluntly that the only thing that would work is to amend the law to provide for full marriage.

The issue of same-sex marriage is before the state Supreme Court. The Court heard arguments last May and has yet to rule.

2. Yes, they can. It's simple.
Marriage for all.

3. Perhaps the state should simply issue civil union licenses instead of recognizing marriage at all.

I'm talking, of course, with both hetero- and gay-marriage. In France, the government doesn't recognize marriages performed by churches. It only recognizes marriages in terms of taxes and legal rights and obligations that follow from that.

7. That would get my vote.
I don't think marriage would solve the problem at hand.

If the law says that people in a civil union have rights and if those rights are being ignore/denied by various agencies, then giving it another name won't help.

Making the parties involved respect the rights that have been enumerated should work regardless of what the union is called.

4. Equal marriage rights for all

Amazing, here in MA, gay folks getting married and the sun hasn't fallen from the sky and I can't name ONE straight marriage that ended in divorce from this new law.

If I hear one more person say "let's just give EVERYONE civil unions!"
thinking they're so clever for choosing an imaginary "third way," I'm gonna scream.

Thanks for posting - K/R

6. Grass also reported to be green
This is why I get so mad when people go on about how civil unions are the ideal solution. Separate but equal is NEVER equal.
