I want to apologize for going off on Newsom yesterday.
Whatever I had to say isn't worth upsetting people in the way I did.

I'm sorry.

11. You're a better person than I am
I was totally seeing red the way that some people were lionizing the guy. I wish more people knew what we know.

12. He's not perfect but neither was Rosa Parks...
Like Rosa, Gavin showed tremendous courage that day and many gays and lesbians respect him for that.

Apparently, many gay men are willing to overlook Obama's imperfections...
Obama pedalled his de-gayifying preacher and ex-gay Donnie McClurkin around the country offering a cure to the GLBT community. The message he is sending out: Don't hate the gays -- embrace them, for they are sick -- but fear not we have the cure!
I ask you to imagine ... yes imagine during the heat of the black civil rights movement one of the politicians offering to de-colorize your skin. How would it feel?

Contrast the above with this

I am not a one issue voter but between the cult-like sermons such as this (From the Village Voice).

"Once in a while, Obama makes a passing reference to our diminishing individual liberties, but hardly ever in his stump speeches. At an early-morning rally the day of the New Hampshire vote, he told some 300 students at the Dartmouth College gym: "My job this morning is to be so persuasive . . . that a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany, and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Barack."

I cannot pull a lever for Obama.

13. actually, I think that if I keep talking about Newsom
I'll wind up apologizing too. The only good thing I can say about the guy is that he did make gay marriage legal for a while. That was a great and happy day. One all of us in San Francisco were proud of. But when you subtract that I have a much different opinion of him. I don't want to get into it again because it is much too personal for me. I nearly lost my head the other day when someone compared him to MLK.

Thanks for responding to my post. Have a nice day.

14. The thing is, that while we have a closer look at who he is
what he DID in marrying those folks is very important. And high time, too. It really doesn't matter in the end if he did it for self promotion or out of the purest motivation. It got done. We need to keep supporting those steps.

And, to keep supporting people in this struggle and not raining on their sense that they are supported.

Has anyone ever thought of inviting these candidates to a talk or debate ON GLBT civil rights? The race is so close, this may be the year where it could happen. I'd be happy to help organize it in San Francisco.

15. I'd be surprised if they accepted
it's unfortunate but gay issues are like dynamite for them. I think that 90% of people on DU would love to see more attention paid to this, but realistically it's not going to happen.
