(Indiana) Senate OKs same-sex marriage ban
http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080130/LOCAL190104/801300479/-1/LOCAL17

The Senate voted 39-9 Tuesday to amend Indiana's Constitution to state that marriage is only between one man and one woman.

The amendment now goes to the House, where it died last year and where it's stalled again this year.
State Rep. Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City, the chairman of the House Rules and Legislative Procedures Committee, which was assigned the bill, has already said he will not give it a hearing because this session's focus is on property taxes.
Frustrated House Republicans, however, are trying to take advantage of that focus. State Rep. Eric Turner, R-Marion, is trying to tack the same-sex marriage amendment onto a proposal to amend the constitution to cap property tax bills. Tuesday, Turner would not say whether he would pursue that amendment.

2. Amen
Didn't the KKK start in Indiana?

When do they outlaw divorce, if they are so supportive of marriage?

4. Indeed
But it has nothing to do with marriage and everything to do with bigotry.

5. You're not alone
There are plenty of other states with the same despicable bans, unfortunately. :-(

6. Ah, my home state
My dad still has trouble understanding why I live in California. I do too sometimes. I could own a mansion there for what I paid for my house here. He lives in Bloomington, the gay-friendly and cultural oasis of the state, and it's a beautiful place. And most importantly, I could be closer to him and my stepmother, who has ovarian cancer and perhaps not much more time left. He's facing being twice widowed, and I'm facing losing a mom again. But I'm just not sure I could live in a state where my partner and I would be second-class citizens, and would doubtless face a lot of prejudice. We haven't ruled out having kids, but both of us having parental rights is a must. It sucks, and I wish these politicians would understand that these laws don't protect families, they tear them apart in innumerable ways.

7. I believe it failed last year because MAJOR INDUSTRIES
located within the state of Indiana were opposed to the ban, citing the absolutely genuine concern that they would have much more trouble recruiting GLBT candidates for positions with a ban in place!! A nice synergy, where financial considerations and human rights came together for a positive outcome.

8. I'm really pissed about this.
when I found out the Sen. Judiciary committee was going to vote on it I contacted Sen. Arnold and was assured there wouldn't even be a vote. There was. He voted against in the committee then for on the floor vote. Still waiting to hear hes excuse for changing his vote. I intend to be at PNC in westville on Feb. 16 to ask him to his face. Wonder how he will answer me in front of a bunch of young college students? He's running for his Senate seat for the first time and I intend to dog him every move he makes. We miss Anita Bowser!

Hey Buffy way to be supportive of we queers here in Indiana. I lived in San Francisco for 10 years and Chicago B4 that. Ya think is makes us feel good we live in a state that wants to codify gay discrimination. NOT. My mommy lives here. Need to be close to mommy, need to live in Indiana. Will fight for the right to live here freely just like I did in CA and IL!
