'Housewives' star Cross: I'm not gay
It's a sad day when people in public life have to declare their sexuality.

'It was really weird, though, that there was all this curiosity'
Thursday, February 10, 2005 Posted: 8:31 AM EST (1331 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Marcia Cross is making it clear that while she's no desperate housewife, she's not gay, either.

The "Desperate Housewives" star said she wasn't a lesbian after "The View" co-host Barbara Walters questioned her Wednesday on rumors regarding her sexuality.

"I'm not," said Cross.

She wondered how the rumors had gotten started.

"Well, it was very odd," said Cross. "And I, I just assumed this is what comes of being 42 and single. I don't know if they just needed to find a reason why I wasn't married."

Cross' publicist had earlier released a statement denying the reports.

The actress was filling in for "The View" co-host Meredith Vieira. Each day, a different star from "Desperate Housewives" has been a guest host on the ABC daytime talk show while it airs from Los Angeles.

Cross said she didn't know what all the fuss was about.

"I do think it was really weird, though, that there was all this curiosity about something, like that -- about sexuality," she said. "And I thought what a world we live in that that's so important."

2. Should have said it was nobody's business

That is the kind of response I would have most likely given. However keep in mind these people are in a business that image is a big part of their success. In the current social climate you can bet you last dollar that such a response would be interpreted, by at least half the country as, she's gay. And since the religious right has already been going after this show she might have thought that might not be a good idea.

Then again if the religious right had not made such a big deal out of this show in the first place I would have probably never watched it. I don't watch a whole lot of TV but I figure if it pisses the religious right off it is most likely a good show, and most likely says something truthful about us, and that is never good as far as the right is concerned. So the response you suggest could of just as well helped to increase ratings. At any rate I am glad I started watching the show as it is the best TV I have seen in some time.

I just think it is unfortunate that people are so preoccupied with such questions.

4. Agreed
The Jodie Foster approach is the best. Refuse to discuss it.

3. it reveals the pressure that {straight} people
have to be partnered up.
being single is a legitimate choice for living.
and one to be rejoiced as much as any other.

single? you must be gay and therefore on the prowl.

it's sad the lack of imagination we have as humans for living our lives.

quick, judge somebody!
