My favorite comic strip.
The writer has a gift for the put down.

1. Just as you find cartoons that berate gays, I find this piece of trash
equally offensive.

5. That cartoon implies that women are stupid, vain, arrogant, and dying
to get in the pants of gay men. You don't like degrading nasty stereotypes? Well, neither do I.

7. This is just one character in this strip. She is just as delusional about
straight men. The gay character is a rock, he seems to be the one that keeps the primary characters grounded. You need to see more of the strip before you pass judgement. I love the cat and the enigmatic Thorax.

Here's Thorax

motivated by sex only. That's what we obscess about. Men talking dirty to us.

What a piece of shit comic.

edit: To add that I would be outraged by any shit comic that portrayed men, gay, straight, bent, or crooked in such a demeaning manner. Apparently you have other ideas on what's appropriate.

10. She wasn't talking about just men not talking that way around her.
Everyone except for a few treat her as a fragile flower, excluding her from "girl talk" because they are afraid she might be offended. It's about public image and private passions. That theme runs through this strip. Her mother is a very tough professor, but she hides her real self and her animal print underwear. Again Public image and private passions.

Remember, it is a comic strip, not real life.

14. You're joking, right?
I mean, it seems as if you are going out of your way to find things to be insulted about. I don't see this comic as saying "ALL women are OBSESSED with sex and men talking dirty to them."

The characters on this strip (or any comic strip, in general)have differences and motivations. Some are obsessive. Some are caring. Some are greedy assholes. Holding up this comic as saying that the author feels all women are "motivated by sex only" is quite a reach.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Uh-oh, now I'm going to be accused of pushing a patriarchal power structure by introducing a penis analogy...

As for being outraged by the portrayal of men in a "demeaning manner", I save my outrage for far more important things. All men (gay straight, bi, etc) have ::gasp:: flaws. So do a few women, I am told. If these are not permitted to be discussed and/or made fun of, what will be left to print?

4. the real question is why would a heterosexual woman waste her time on a gay man like this?
being friends and companions, fine, but her ego is a bit outta control here, and the gay man is a disinterested party with nothing to lose by being objective about her as he sees it.

6. Geez--how selfish can you get?
A least the religious nuts who seek to convert gays are doing it to please their god rather than reward themselves.

9. No, they think they'd be rewarded by their God. If you love a person,
you accept them as they are, you don't endeavor to change them.

I don't think the woman in the comic is trying to "help" anyone but herself.

12. That's true. The woman in the op always loses out in the end. She
has no control over her private passions and continually makes an ass of herself. For the most part the others have control over them, but are conflicted. The gay male character is at peace with himself, as is the Thorax character.

17. When I saw this, my thought was, "She is a lot like the Democratic Party"
Capable of seeing only what she wants to see, and when you point out her many failings, she hears only what she wants to hear.

19. I used to read that strip faithfully for years.
A funny strip about two women and their lives, that rarely relied on stereotypes and often broke them. Often calmly scathing about prejudices. :7

I haven't made a point of reading comic strips in years, and I'm not sure why I got out of the habit.

20. This comic strip reminded me of a real live woman
I met at a GLBT function, who told me that her boyfriend "used to be gay."

"I don't think it works that way," I told her. When I suggested that perhaps she meant he was bisexual she said yes, but I wondered why she didn't say that in the first place. She was quite drunk.

Anyway, the boyfriend came into the room and was perhaps the gayest thing in New York City.

The woman said all of her boyfriends were gay, or "used to be" gay and apparently she collects them, with photos of "her men" on her web site.

I suspect she is rather wealthy and "her men" are all rather poor.

Anyway...

the cartoon was obviously not suggesting that ALL women are that homophobic and clueless.
There are gals who do fall in love with gay men and even in this day and age hope they can change them, and they do their best to repress the guy's homosexual impulses. In some cases you can feel sorry for someone so desperately, pathetically in love .. or in denial.

But one poster was right when he said (I paraphrase)that often it's a love that is totally selfish, not to mention unfair and unrealistic.

But I think we should cut the woman who was offended some slack. Some things that seem or are entirely innocent can push people's buttons. A joke one person finds funny can be completely offensive to somebody else.

That's life.

I'm willing to pity women like that--they're merely clueless. But the woman in the OP's strip is trying to "help" only herself--to an orgasm. That's the difference.

Now I won't get to see it, and offer my own unique, scintillating take on it. The real losers here are my fellow DUers. I feel for all of you.
